How did NIU Philosophy help prepare you for your doctoral program/career in philosophy?
The M.A. program in philosophy at NIU solidified my decision to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and theology from a university that does not offer a philosophy major, I strongly suspected that philosophy was the field for me. However, I was unsure about philosophy as a viable career path and even considered a career in law or math due to my limited exposure to the discipline. NIU Philosophy expanded my views about what philosophy is and can be, mitigating my doubts about pursuing a career in academia. The graduate courses at NIU provided me with the opportunity to hone my skills specifically as a philosopher, rather than as a theologian or mathematician.
What do you feel is special about NIU Philosophy?
The people. In my experience, the members of NIU’s philosophy department, both faculty and students, strive to create a collaborative, rather than combative, space in which to practice philosophy, both in and out of the classroom. NIU’s M.A. program in philosophy emphasized the importance of doing philosophy within a community. Philosophy is a dialogue, not a monologue, as I discovered in DeKalb.
Why would you recommend NIU Philosophy to applicants to MA programs?
NIU's M.A. program in philosophy is ideal for the curious student with a strong interest in, but limited exposure to, philosophy. It offers a stimulating and supportive environment to grow as a thinker and honestly decide whether one would like to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy or apply one’s philosophical skills elsewhere.
