August 2026

Welcome to the Huskie Family Newsletter, your place as a parent or family member to find out what’s happening at Northern Illinois University.

We encourage you to also check out our Student Life at NIU website where you’ll find helpful information to share with your student.

Northern Illinois University's DeKalb campus

🏫 Welcome to campus, Huskies!

Fall move-in is the week of Aug. 19-23 and we’re excited to welcome your students to campus, either for the first time or as a returning student. We understand you or your student may have questions about housing. Get answers at our Housing and Residential Services website, or by reaching out to our team at housing@niu.edu.

Week of Welcome (WOW) also runs Aug. 19-23 and serves as an introduction to NIU for your Huskie. We’ll have fun and friendly events to get everyone off to a solid start. Students will meet with their academic college, learn about important campus resources and discover what it means to be part of our pack and celebrate Huskie Pride.

Find your community

We encourage your student to get involved, early and often at NIU. Connecting with others is a great way for students to gain a sense of community in a new place. Here are some specific ways to get involved oncampus, including student organizations, intramural sports programs and fraternities and sororities where your student can build relationships and join activities that transform their educational experience.

📌 THINGS TO KNOW

Connect with NIU.

Connect with NIU

We offer dedicated apps for helping students succeed at NIU, including the following.

Visit our website to check out all the apps.

  • NIU Mobile App: Helps students access resources, calendars, social media and more. First-year students can opt in for messages just for new Huskies.
  • Navigate: Connects students, advisors and services to support academic planning and success.
  • Huskie Hub: With more than 200 student organizations to explore, this app offers students a convenient way to find groups that interest them.

Advisors are here to help

We encourage your student to work with their advisor throughout their time at NIU. Advisors serve as trusted guides to help explain how college works, answer questions and support students as they navigate new experiences. Your student’s advisor can help with choosing classes, understanding degree requirements and connecting with campus resources such as career services, tutoring, financial aid and mental health support.

Accessing your student’s records

As a parent or legal guardian, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) protects the privacy of your child’s educational records from early childhood through college. Once your child turns 18 or enters college, the rights previously held by you transfer exclusively to your student.

We encourage your student to use MyNIU Shared Access, which provides a convenient way for them to share information with you or other guests. With Shared Access, you can make a payment on your student’s account or view the student’s weekly schedule.

Freedom of expression

College is a place for inquiry and gaining new knowledge, along with sharing different perspectives. We are committed to freedom of expression at NIU, to make sure everyone in our university community has the opportunity to speak, write, listen, challenge and learn.

🐾 MEET A HUSKIE

Taoheed Adeoye

Taoheed Adeoye, biological sciences major

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?

"I make friends by sitting near others in class, joining discussions and starting conversations about sports or TV shows. Volunteering and clubs helped, too. I would suggest finding some interesting hobbies, that way you have more chances of meeting people who also love the things you enjoy."
