The Office of the President invites all full-time, non-academic civil service and SPS staff at NIU to apply for a year-long professional development and educational program. The cohort of up to 15 academy fellows will participate in 10 monthly sessions with a diverse group of university leaders; engaging and interactive leadership activities; networking; and a mentor program. The academy strives to create a network of leaders at all levels and areas of the university to further promote and sustain a culture of shared leadership at NIU.
Participants will be exposed to multiple facets of university leadership, operations, governance and the current higher education landscape. Large portions of the program will focus on professional growth and enhancing staff’s leadership skills, such as consensus-building, conflict resolution, self-awareness and creating shared goals.
For more information about the program goals, curriculum and the application process, please see the full program description or attend one of the two virtual informational sessions:
The monthly sessions will generally be held on the second Friday of each month from August through June. No meeting will be held in December. To apply for the academy, please complete the online form, along with a brief letter of interest, current résumé and completed supervisor’s recommendation form. Supervisors can nominate candidates who will be invited to complete the online form as well. The deadline to submit all materials is Monday, May 1, 2023.

- Have you supervisor's permission.

Supportive Professional Staff (SPS) Council call for candidates.
The Supportive Professional Staff Council (SPS) is seeking nominations for representatives and alternates to the SPS Council. Current members whose terms expire in 2023 (and others who have previously served) are eligible to run again. Alternates whose terms have not expired are eligible to run for representative seats. See your current representatives and alternates on the council website. You, or an SPS colleague you know, can help contribute to the mission of this council. Please consider participating in this nomination process.
Make your nominations electronically by visiting go.niu.edu/spscnominations. You can log in to the nomination ballot containing a list of employees in your division who are eligible for nomination. Per an SPS Council bylaw change, employees who are SPS as of July 1, 2023 are eligible for consideration even if their status changes to civil service during Fiscal Year 2024 – they would be able to finish out the fiscal year of service to council if they are still interested.
Nominations may be submitted until 5 p.m. Friday, April 4. If you encounter any problems in this process, please feel free to contact Frances Mitchell at fmitchell@niu.edu.
Thank you very much for participating in this important shared governance process.
