Join President Freeman and Faculty Senate President Ben Creed for an engaging conversation about the state of the university and 2024 goals on January 23, 2024 at 3 p.m. in the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center or via Zoom. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions in person or online. Refreshments will be provided including samples of Jada Juice. Employees will receive release time to join the event.

Nominations are now being accepted for NIU's staff awards.
Supportive Professional Staff (SPS) and Operating Staff (OS) have a critical role in NIU’s success. NIU annually recognizes current staff members and staff teams who have demonstrated exemplary performance and service in promoting the goals of the university while demonstrating the core values of excellence, equity and inclusion, integrity, collaboration and service.
The staff awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge staff members’ extraordinary effort and exemplary service.
The nomination deadline is Feb. 12, 2024. The nomination process includes providing references. Please submit nominations early, so references have enough time to provide information by the deadline.

Upcoming bridge repairs to impact campus traffic.
The City of DeKalb will continue repairing the bridge located on Lucinda Ave beginning this week. Construction is expected to end in June. More information, including a detour route is available by visiting the City of DeKalb’s website or by viewing NIU's interactive map.

Annual Commercial Card training to begin Feb. 1, 2024.
Card Services will be conducting our annual commercial card refresher training Feb. 1 through March 1. This training is required of all card holders, transaction approvers and proxies. More information will become available closer to the start date.

NIU Outdoor Adventures has everything you need to enjoy this beautiful snowy weather including equipment rentals (snowboards, cross-country skis, ice skates and snowboards) and epic adventures. The Adventure Center has new updated hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Friday and Sunday. Reach out for more information and stop by the Recreation Center to meet Shannon Range, our new assistant director for Outdoor Adventures.

Mileage reimbursement rate increased Jan. 1, 2024.
Effective Jan. 1, 2024, the mileage reimbursement rate for employees using private passenger vehicles for university business increased from 65 1/2 cents per mile to 67 cents per mile. The Electronic Travel Voucher form in OnBase has been updated accordingly. Please use this electronic form for all NIU and split funded travel.
- Rate per mile for travel that occurred on July 1, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023 – 65 1/2 cents.
- Rate per mile for travel that occurson or after Jan. 1, 2024 – 67 cents.
The paper travel voucher form located on the Accounts Payable webpage has been updated to reflect the new rate as well. Please use the updated form for Foundation-only funded travel occurring on or after Jan. 1, 2024.
Please share this message with those in your department who engage in university business travel and those who process travel reimbursement requests.

Alumni Day at the Huskie Food Pantry (8:30 to 11 a.m. or 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17) Help our Huskie Food Pantry serve students during the first week of the semester, which is typically the hardest week for them to recruit student volunteers. NIU employees can use their Huskies Give Back (volunteer leave) time to support the pantry/closet, and our students, during a time when support is sorely needed.

The NIU Newman Civic Fellowship Program offers students opportunities to expand their learning, make an impact and create meaningful professional connections.
Nominations are open for our 2024-25 program and will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024. Nominations may only be submitted by faculty or staff members. The fellow is announced by April.

Register today for Spring 2024 "Crucial Conversations" training.
We invite you to join Human Resource Services in one of our “Crucial Conversations” two-day, in-person training courses. Led by John Acardo, senior associate vice president and chief human resource officer, this course focuses on fostering effective communication and mastering dialogues that are crucial to an organization’s health and effective performance. If you have an interest in considering advancing your skills for engagement, efficiency and equity in your work, we encourage you to join us for “Crucial Conversations.”
Dates: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 22 and 23, 2024. Location: TBD.
The cost for the two-day training is $350. This includes the course materials as well as breakfast and lunch. The presenter is not paid for this activity.

Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Insights

This week, NIU students received a link to the student survey from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the institutional accrediting association that is comprehensively evaluating our school this year. Input received from these surveys is important, as it helps identify both strengths and weaknesses at NIU, as viewed through the lens of our students.
Please do not hesitate to mention this HLC survey to your students and encourage them to fill it out by Thursday, Jan. 25. The survey is brief and should take less than five minutes to complete.

2024 National Day of Racial Healing
NIU’s Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center will host two events to celebrate the 2024 National Day of Racial Healing.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 in the lower level of the Holmes Student Center, join our Division of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and our Division of Student Affairs to take the #HowWeHeal pledge. Find out how you can be a part of this national conversation.
Then, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium in the Holmes Student Center, continue your #HowWeHeal pledge and attend a follow-up film screening and discussion. Come and watch “Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequality” followed by an interactive discussion with the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center facilitators Joe Flynn, Ph.D., and Yixin Yu. Popcorn and beverages will be provided. Please register for the event by Jan. 22.

Project FLEX earns $2.55M to maintain, advance work in juvenile justice centers
Project FLEX has secured a five-year, $2.55 million grant from the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) to continue and expand its work providing positive interventions with youth who are in secure custody of the state. Read more.

World-renowned duo Christian Lindberg and Roland Pöntinen to perform at NIU, Jan. 16
For more than 40 years the world renowned duo of trombonist Christian Lindberg and pianist Roland Pöntinen have performed around the world and recorded more than 20 albums together. On Tuesday, January 16 they will perform in concert at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in NIU’s Music Building. Read more.
