Updates for High School Partners

November 2025

Greetings,

At NIU, we know that being a student encompasses so much more than just taking classes and earning a degree. It's also all about the community that surrounds each student and the support they receive.

Student success and well-being are at the heart of everything we do. We want students to build a strong sense of belonging, take part in meaningful experiences and access our many resources tailored to their unique needs.

Because we believe every Huskie should have the tools they need to succeed, especially through any challenges they may encounter. The most successful students are those who ask for help.

I invite you and your students to explore all the resources that NIU offers to help Huskies be the best they can be.

I know that guiding students as they apply to college is just one of many tasks you do daily as a high school counselor, and I want to acknowledge the hard work you put in to navigate life’s challenges alongside your student.

Thanks for your dedication to your students and for being an invaluable partner. Should

Warmly,

HUSKIE SPOTLIGHT

“One thing I’ve found pleasantly surprising about my experience at NIU is the strong sense of community and support. Whether it’s professors taking extra time to help, classmates being collaborative or the many resources available on campus, I’ve consistently felt that people here want me to succeed.”

Fighting food and housing insecurity

We know a little help goes a long way. Our Center for Student Assistance helps students find the best resources for their needs or situation. Among those:

  • Our Huskie Food Pantry provides nutritious groceries two days a week, from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays at our Chick Evans Field House. Visitors can walk in or preregister to shop.
  • Huskie Harvest is redefining how colleges can fight food insecurity and food waste at the same time. This initiative has recovered more than 21,000 lbs. of surplus catered food, transforming it into over 24,000 free, ready-to-heat meals for students at four campus locations.
  • We also offer housing support for students who are experiencing housing insecurity or who are considered to be a student in care.

Celebrating our first-generation students

Nov. 8 was National First-Generation College Celebration Day. Do you know that more than half our undergraduates are among the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college? We recognize the strengths these students bring, and we’re proud to call them Huskies.

Offering programs and services to help first-generation students adjust, NIU was named a member of the FirstGen Forward Network last year. We welcome these trailblazing students with events like our recent First-Gen Huskies Day.

Embracing our military students

We honor our military students on Veterans Day and every day at NIU.

Our support for all veterans, active duty, National Guard and Reservists starts from a student’s interest in attending NIU all the way through graduation and beyond through our Military and Veteran Services. Services include:

  • Tailored financial guidance.
  • Assistance with the admission process, ensuring credit for military experience and training.
  • Military and veteran student coaching.

Our Department of Military Science, the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) at NIU is designed to give students experience in organizing, motivating and leading others — all while completing their bachelor’s degree of choice.

Visit opportunities

We offer daily campus visits which include opportunities to take part in academic college and program visits. Your students can learn more and ask questions about their intended majors. We're adding academic visit opportunities every day so check back often to see what's new.

Encourage your students to register for a visit today!
