The fall semester is off to an exciting start at NIU, with one of our largest freshman classes in the past decade and 1,403 new transfer students joining the Huskie family. As we welcome students from community colleges and other institutions across the region, we’re excited to see transfer students continue to choose NIU as the next step in their academic journeys.

Our transfer students bring valuable experiences, perspectives and accomplishments to campus, strengthening the Huskie community and enriching the university in countless ways. Through flexible degree options and transfer-focused resources, opportunities for involvement and career preparation, NIU remains committed to helping transfer students make a successful transition and reach their goals.

As we celebrate the start of a new academic year, we’re also looking ahead to the next generation of transfer Huskies. In this issue, you’ll find updates and resources to help you support your students, including the latest enrollment highlights, transfer opportunities and ways students can connect with NIU and experience life as a Huskie.

NIU welcomed 1,403 new transfer students this fall, making transfer enrollment an important part of the university’s strong start to the academic year. Overall, NIU enrolled 15,811 students, with total enrollment remaining relatively stable compared with last fall. NIU also continues to invest in transfer students, with 836 — nearly 60% — of this fall’s new transfer students receiving merit scholarships totaling $1.317 million.

With record-high incoming GPAs, growing interest in University Honors and strong first-generation enrollment, this year’s Huskie class reflects the many ways NIU is helping students find opportunity, belonging and a path to success. We look forward to building on that momentum and welcoming even more transfer students in the year ahead.

During National Transfer Student Week (Oct. 19-23), NIU will celebrate the achievements and contributions of transfer students. Through partnerships with the Office of Orientation and First-Year Experience and Career Services, the Community College Initiatives team is creating opportunities for transfer students to connect, engage and be recognized throughout the week. Together, these efforts reinforce NIU's commitment to fostering a welcoming environment where transfer students feel valued, supported and empowered to succeed.

Encourage your students to make a visit to NIU part of their transfer journey. Transfers Get Information Fridays (TGIF) are designed specifically for future transfer students, offering the opportunity to connect one-on-one with a transfer admissions counselor, hear from current Huskies and learn more about transfer pathways, scholarships, academic programs and campus resources.

Other upcoming opportunities include Preview Days on Oct. 12 and Nov. 11. Daily campus tours and self-guided visits also are available.

Fall group visits are currently full; registration for spring group visits will open in late November. Explore all our campus visit opportunities.

We encourage students to apply early for admission for the best consideration for scholarships and financial aid.

Our priority deadline for the spring semester is Oct. 1, and summer and fall semester transfer admission is March 1.

NIU’s 119th Homecoming celebration is coming Oct. 5–11, bringing a week of events that showcase Huskie pride and welcome students, families, alumni and the community to campus. Highlights include the Homecoming football game against Air Force on Oct. 10, as well as the Down Home in Downtown DeKalb Block Party on Oct. 8, featuring a pep rally, March of the Huskies, food trucks and activities for all ages.

What better time to showcase Huskie pride than Homecoming? As NIU celebrates Homecoming, the university will also welcome the cameras for “The College Tour,” a popular college series streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Filming will take place on campus Oct. 5–9, with up to 10 current NIU students sharing their Huskie experiences and highlighting topics such as academics, innovation, student life, career readiness, belonging and study abroad.

The episode is expected to be available on the NIU and The College Tour websites in spring 2027, followed by a national release on Amazon Prime Video next summer.
