This full-time (20-hour) Graduate Assistant will report to the Campus Recreation Associate Director for Facilities Operations.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assist in the overall administration of two indoor recreation facilities, outdoor recreation fields and outdoor basketball courts. Aquatics

Aquatics Manager - $8.75/hour

Duties Include:

  • Coordinate and manage all operational functions and aquatics student personnel for Anderson and Gabel Pools for Campus Recreation scheduled open and lap swimming times, swim lessons and certification classes, special events, and pool rentals.  Hire, train, and evaluate lifeguards.  Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines.  Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures.  Establish good relationships with patrons, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Must possess current Lifeguard, CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogen and First Aid certifications.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree. 
  • Experience programming/teaching of swim lessons preferred.

Facilities

Equipment Maintenance Manager - $8.75/hour

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance Manager Position will report to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation. 
  • Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the cardio, free weight and selector equipment maintenance program including:
    • Performing general maintenance and repairs, tracking inventory/stock parts, keeping accurate records on maintenance performed assessment of equipment condition, and assist with purchase recommendations.
    • Assist with training of Open Recreation student staff in areas of preventative maintenance as able.
    • Assist additional CR Program areas with maintenance/repair needs.
      • Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines. 
      • Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures.  Establish good relationships with patrons, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.

Qualifications:

  • Registered full-time student at Northern Illinois University.
  • Must be able to work summer months.
  • Good organizational skills and able to work independently.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with others in a dynamic, changing, and diverse environment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a recreation/fitness based environment.
  • Experience in performing general maintenance on cardio/weight equipment.
  • Experience in maintaining inventory records.
  • Experience working in a customer/client environment.
  • Current certifications in AED, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens.

Fitness/Wellness

Group Fitness Pass Checkers - $8.25/hour

  • The pass checker is responsible for making sure all participants fill out a PAR-Q and waiver and then putting the PAR-Q’s on the binder at the front desk and turning in the waivers to the Graduate Assistant
  • The pass checker will receive additional duties from the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness and the Graduate Assistant
  • The pass checker will swipe each participants’ one card and keep a tally of the total number of participants for each class, as well as the number of male and female participants
  • Pass Checkers need to arrive 15 minutes before the first class
  • The pass checker needs to be available during their whole shift in order to assist participants with any questions or issues
  • They will get the activity room keys from the front closet and the pass checker binder and card swipe from the front cabinet
  • They should open each room, turn on the lights, and make sure there is cleaning spray and clean towels.

Group Fitness Instructors - $8.25/hour + prep time

The Group Fitness Instructors will be responsible for teaching and instructing various fitness and instructional exercises, while providing a safe environment at the NIU Student Recreation Center. This position will monitor all participants in the classes they teach, assist patrons, and set up/tear down equipment as needed.

Expectations

  • Provide exceptional customer service
  • Lead effective group exercise according to safety standards of AFAA, ACE, ACSM, and NIU In-house training
  • Bring to each class a commitment to participants by showing concern for their fitness goals.  Also show enjoyment, passion, have fun, provide safe exercise instruction, appropriate modifications, and assessment of performance.
  • Obtain an approved substitute instructor in case of absence and notify the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness.
  • Check email and phone frequently for any new/updated fitness information
  • Attend appropriate training sessions and meetings
  • Maintain current exercise/fitness certification and CPR/AED certification
  • Arrive promptly for scheduled classes
  • Start and finish classes on time
  • Provide support to other instructors and participants
  • Always display good manners and professionalism
  • Average 5-7 participants for morning/afternoon classes and 10-20 participants for evening/night classes
  • Complete semester evaluations
  • Promote other Campus Recreation (Personal Training and Nutrition)
  • Use appropriate music during Group Fitness classes
  • Always invite others to participate in Group Fitness classes
  • Enforce the rules of Campus Recreation to ensure a safe, clean, and organized class
  • Put equipment back after each class, turn off the microphone and stereo system
  • Attend regular staff meetings and training
  • Make announcements before every class
  • Report any incidents, suggestions, or complaints to Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness or Graduate assistant
  • Arrive to class early enough, when possible, to set up equipment, have music playing and greet participants at the door

Personal Trainers - $9.00/hour + prep time

  • Work one-on-one with clients, providing them with specific exercise programs in cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, and flexibility.  Conduct fitness assessments and consult with clients on personal needs and interests.  Teach the benefits of exercise and wellness to assist with improving client quality of life through support and motivation.
  • Personal trainers must be certified through ACE, ACSM, or NSCA. Certifications from any other organization will need to be discussed and approved before employment. Trainers not certified upon employment will need to obtain a personal training certification from one of the organizations previously mentioned within 3 months.
  •  Each staff member must also maintain up-to-date standard CPR, First Aid and AED certifications. It is your responsibility to inform the administrative staff if you are having trouble getting certified or re-certified. During your shift, it is imperative that you adhere to all guidelines that are concurrent with your certifications.

Intramural Sports

Officials - $8.25/hour

Duties Include:

  • Attend Sports Officials Training
  • Officiate ports and activities during nights and weekends.
  • Interpret governing rules for each intramural sport during events.
  • Resolve conflicts manifested during sporting events.
  • Perform the set-up and breakdown of each playing venue.
  • Process nightly incident, accident, and portest reports.
  • Promote and enforce all Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Exhibit good customer service to all participants, at all times.
  • Develop: Interpersonal communication skills, conflict resolution and problem solving, rule interpretation, thorough knowledge of various sports programs and governing rules, and enhance sport officiating skills.

  • Strong level of interpersonal skills and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of sports and recreational activities.
  • Marginal interest in sports officiating.

Supervisors - $8.50/hour

  • Responsible for on-site supervision of Intramural Sport programs and events conducted at the Student Recreation Center, Chick Evans Field House, on outdoor recreation fields, and other locations as necessary.  Ensure participant adherence to policies and procedures of the program and facilities.  Prepare equipment for programs and events.  Provide site supervision of sports officials.  Assist with the training and evaluation of sports officials.

Marketing

Graphic Designer - $8.75/hour

Position Overview:

Campus Recreation is seeking a visual communication major to develop designs for various posters, fliers, t-shirts, brochures, advertisements, our website, and other promotional materials.  The student Graphic Designer will assist in the execution of a departmental marketing plan and collaborate with the Coordinator of Marketing and Public Relations for Campus Recreation. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, coordinate, and produce Campus Recreation print publications, facility signage, and web designs
  • Coordinate the development of design plans and timetables for projects
  • Assist with developing and implementing marketing strategies to promote facilities, programs, services, and special events for the department.
  • Aid in the development of establishing design standards for materials produced by Campus Recreation
  • Adhere to design standards and principles of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and Northern Illinois University
  • Assist in keeping production of all printed materials and projects on schedule
  • Write, edit, and proofread copy for publications
  • Assist with the inventory and ordering of equipment and supplies related to marketing and graphic design
  • Assist with website design, development, and maintenance
  • Take program and event photos as needed and assist in the maintenance of Campus Recreation photo library
  • Assist in the development of audio and video productions for Campus Recreation

Qualifications:

  • NIU undergraduate student studying Visual Communication
  • Evidence of experience gained inside or outside the classroom, or both.
  • An above average knowledge of various design software programs including but not limited to: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and HTML
  • Experience using Cascade Web Server preferred
  • Organized and able to multi-task.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Solid one-on-one and group communication skills- including listening, researching,and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting.

Other Information:

Facility Supervisors - $8.50/hour

  • Responsible for the supervision and oversight of designated Campus Recreation program and facility areas including the Student Recreation Center, Chick Evans Field House, New Residence Hall Fitness Room, Gilbert Fitness Center, and the Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex
  • Perform opening and closing duties for the facility

  • Monitor and verify financial transactions and reports for membership services workers

  • Responsible for the supervision and oversight of designated Campus Recreation program and facility areas
  • Must be willing to work in any of the entry level Open Recreation positions:
    • Fitness Assistant: Responsible for cleaning equipment, policy enforcement, preventative maintenance, and risk management within all cardio and weight rooms in the Student Recreation Center (SRC)
    • Welcome Desk: Responsible for maintaining a customer-friendly environment which includes greeting patrons; providing access to eligible students, members, and guests; answering phones; assisting patrons with court reservations; and maintaining the front office area and operations
    • Equipment Check Out: Responsible for the management of equipment check-out and inventory
  • Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and be able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines
  • Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures
  • Establish good relationships, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.

This position is an entry level position in the Open Recreation program area. Additional position advancements include: membership services and register management, satellite facility oversight (Chick Evans Field House, New Residence Hall Fitness Room, Gilbert Fitness Center, and the Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex), and Facility Supervisor positions which are contingent upon work experience and job performance.

Outdoor Adventure

Adventure Center Attendants - $8.25/hour

  • This position is reserved for current Trip Leaders or Team Facilitators or applicants who are also interested in these positions.
  • Responsibilities: Renting outdoor gear to the university community; instructing individuals on the appropriate use and care of equipment;  providing information on various local, regional, and national recreation locations;  inspecting and repairing equipment; and completing inventory reports, performing data entry tasks, and handling cash operations.
  • Must be CPR/AED, Blood Born Pathogen, and First Aid certified within 3 months of being hired.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree. 

Team Facilitator - $12.54/hour for facilitation $8.25/hour for prep and training

  • Responsibilities: Meet prospective groups to begin planning team workshops; assist in the final stages of planning sequences for scheduled events; prepare and organize activity equipment before scheduled events, and maintain equipment after use; Facilitate team workshops (indoor and/or outdoors) that include ice breakers, initiative and processing for diverse groups including youth and adult ranging from 4 to 30 participants; writing a workshop reports following the events; serving as a representative of Campus Recreation to participants; Demonstrating good judgment in regards to participant safety and well being; willing and able to work in the cold, rain, and heat, as well as good weather
  • Requirements: NIU undergraduate or graduate student. Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role. Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual.
  • Attend an initial 4.5 hours training.
  • CPR and First Aid certified - obtained within first semester of employment by attending scheduled trainings.

  • New trip leaders recieve training throughout the fall semester with a weeklong plus training trip over winter break. 
  • Responsibilities: Trip Leaders plan and lead trips for students interested in participating in outdoor recreational activities.  Enthusiasm and experience in outdoor adventure is a must. 
  • Clean driving record is mandatory, if you have any moving violations you can not be employed.
