Student Employment Job Descriptions

The Rec. employs students in the following program areas/categories but we may not be hiring in all areas at all times:

Administrative

Graduate Assistantships-20 hours/week includes stipend and tuition waiver

Facility Operations

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assist in the overall administration of two indoor recreation facilities, outdoor recreation fields and outdoor basketball courts. Duties include management of: facility reservations, facility contracts and rentals, maintenance, and special event production. Additional duties include: equipment inventory control, assessment, research, student supervision, and personnel development.

Financial Operations

Responsible for assisting in the overall administratino and management of the financial and membership component of Campus Recreation.  This position will assist in the daily deposits, reconciling registration and financial discrepancies, payroll processing, archival documents, membership management, and assisting with the overall administration and management of the Event Business Management System (on-line registration program).

Fitness and Wellness

Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the Fitness and Wellness program (group fitness classes, personal training, nutrition services, and four cardio/free weight rooms) including staff training, program development, risk management, supervision, assessment, and marketing.

Intramural Sports

Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the Intramural Sports program including staff training, program development, risk management, supervision, assessment, and marketing.

Marketing

Responsible for assisting in the overall marketing and promoting of the programs within Campus Recreation and the facilities associated with it including the Student Recreation Center, the Chick Evans Field House, the Outing Centre, outdoor field space, and Gabel and Anderson Pools.

Open Recreation

Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the Open Recreation and Youth Camp programs (service counter operations, equipment issue, facility supervision, and programming) including staff training, program development, risk management, supervision, assessment, and marketing.

Outdoor Adventure

Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the Outdoor Adventure program (Outing Centre rentals and Adventure trip programs) including staff training, program development, risk management, supervision, assessment, and marketing.

Sport Clubs

Responsible for assisting in the overall administration and management of the Sport Club program including club trainings, program development, risk management, assessment, supervision, and marketing.

Administration Internships-academic credit in Adult Higher Education, Business, or related field

  • Assist the Director in special projects such as Campus Recreation assessment, business administration, membership services, etc.
  • Must be currently enrolled at a college/university.

Children and Youth

Huskie Pup Summer Camp Assistant Coordinator-$8.50-$9.00/hour, depending on qualifications

  • Supervise, lead, and perform administrative functions for the Huskie Pup Summer Camp.  Responsibilities include the implementation of all activities, interacting with campers, facilitating field trips, and participating in activities.

Huskie Pup Summer Camp Counselors-$8.25-$8.50/hour, depending on qualifications

  • Counselors provide youth (ages 6-12) with a positive and welcoming environment in which to learn and play.  Assist in the development and implementation of all summer camp programs and activities, including but not limited to, arts and crafts, sports, field trips, swimming/water play, and games.

Fitness/Wellness

Group Fitness Class Attendants-$8.25/hour

  • Responsible for checking in group fitness participants prior to class start times.  Take and record accurate participation counts and participant statistics.  Assist group fitness instructors with class preparations and equipment set-up and take-down, class reports, and activity room maintenance.  Provide quality customer service to FitPass holders and potential participants, promote all fitness classes, and assist with group fitness class evaluations and special class initiatives.   
  • Must be CPR/AED and Blood Borne Pathogen certified.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree. 

Group Fitness Instructors-$8.25/hour + prep time

  • Responsible for leading safe, effective, and fun fitness classes for Campus Recreation.  Group Fitness leaders are responsible for providing fitness instruction, supervision, and a supportive exercise environment to all group fitness participants.  Must be energetic and enthusiastic.  Group fitness instructors are responsible for the continual development of personal fitness instruction skills and knowledge.
  • Must have previous group fitness instruction experience, OR hold a national certification and have previous instruction experience, OR have completed the Campus Recreation Fitness Instructor Training Program.  Auditions are part of the application and interview process.
  • Must be CPR/AED and Blood Borne Pathogen certified.

Personal Trainers-$9.00/hour + prep time

  • Work one-on-one with clients, providing them with specific exercise programs in cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, and flexibility.  Conduct fitness assessments and consult with clients on personal needs and interests.  Teach the benefits of exercise and wellness to assist with improving client quality of life through support and motivation.

  • Must be Personal Trainer certified through a nationally recognized organization.

Fitness/Wellness Interns-academic credit in KNPE, Public Health, or related field

  • Assist in the administration of fitness and wellness programming for Campus Recreation and the NIU campus community.  Responsibilities may include program development and implementation, marketing fitness and wellness programs and services, program evaluations, and staff supervision.  Interns are encouraged to work with the Assistant Director for Fitness/Wellness to tailor specific responsibilities to their personal interests and experiences.

Intramural Sports

Officials-$8.25/hour

  • Learn and apply the rules and regulations of sports activities in the game environment.  Sports include flag football, softball, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, and volleyball.  Prior experience not required, will train. 
  • Must be CPR/AED and Blood Borne Pathogen certified.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree. 

Supervisors-$8.50/hour

  • Responsible for on-site supervision of Intramural Sport programs and events conducted at the Student Recreation Center, Chick Evans Field House, on outdoor recreation fields, and other locations as necessary.  Ensure participant adherence to policies and procedures of the program and facilities.  Prepare equipment for programs and events.  Provide site supervision of sports officials.  Assist with the training and evaluation of sports officials.

Marketing

Marketing Assistants-$8.25/hour

  • Assist in the development and coordination of marketing efforts for all programs and services provided by Campus Recreation.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the design and distribution of departmental printed materials, scheduling and planning community/campus outreach events, website design and maintenance, and other marketing functions associated with the day-to-day office operations.
  • Must be CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogen, and First Aid certified.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree.

Graphic Designers-$8.25/hour

  • Develop designs for various department posters, fliers, t-shirts, brochures, advertisements, and other promotional materials. Assist in the execution of a departmental marketing plan, as well as collaborate with campus partners on special program and event marketing and design projects.
  • Must be CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogen, and First Aid certified.

Open Recreation

Aquatics Manager-$8.75/hour

  • Coordinate and manage all operational functions and aquatics student personnel for Anderson and Gabel Pools for Campus Recreation scheduled open and lap swimming times, special events, and pool rentals.  Hire, train, and evaluate lifeguards.  Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines.  Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures.  Establish good relationships with patrons, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.

  • Must be Lifeguard, CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogen and First Aid certified.

Facility Supervisors-$8.50/hour

  • Responsible for the oversight of Campus Recreation facilities and patrons.  Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines.  Ensure that Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures are enforced.  Directly supervise Area Attendants.  Assist in hiring, training, and evaluating Area Attendants.  Must establish and demonstrate good relationships with patrons, the ability to resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.  Responsible for opening and securing Campus Recreation facilities.

Lifeguards-$8.50/hour

  • Responsible for guarding the pool, providing a safe environment, and maintaining the pool area during open and lap swimming times, special events, and pool rentals.  Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines.  Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures.  Establish good relationships with patrons, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons.  Responsible for opening and closing procedures of the pools and locker rooms.
  • Must be Lifeguard, CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogen, and First Aid certified.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree.

Building Staff-$8.25/hour

  • Responsible for the supervision and oversight of designated Campus Recreation program and facility areas.  Perform tasks and projects including, but not limited to, equipment set-up, take-down, and distribution, maintaining inventory counts and reports, and cardio and strength training equipment cleaning at both the Student Recreation Center and Chick Evans Field House.  Must be knowledgeable in the areas of risk management and emergency procedures and able to respond to emergencies within established guidelines.  Enforce all Campus Recreation and NIU policies and procedures.  Establish good relationships with patrons, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies and procedures to patrons 
  • Responsible for the Service Counter operations, including facility access and cash register functions.  Must create a customer-friendly environment and be able to respond to customer questions and needs.  Membership Services Attendants will greet patrons; provide access to eligible students, members, and guests; answer phones; assist patrons with court reservations; manage equipment check-out and inventory; and maintain the front office area.  Attendants will also handle monetary transactions and paperwork filing and archiving.

Outdoor Adventure

 Student Manager-$8.75/hour

  • Assists the Outdoor Adventure Graduate Assistant and Assistant Director in all facets of the rental operation and adventure trip program.  This includes, but is not limited to, leading trips, staff training and supervision, development and implementation of risk management policies and procedures, equipment inventory management, maintenance of gear, and program marketing.

Adventure Center Attendants-$8.25/hour 

  • Responsible for: renting outdoor gear to the university community; instructing individuals on the appropriate use and care of equipment;  providing information on various local, regional, and national recreation locations;  inspecting and repair equipment; and completing inventory reports, performing data entry tasks, and handling cash operations.

Trip Leaders-$8.25-8.50/hour, depending on qualifications

  • Plan and lead trips for students interested in participating in outdoor recreational activities.  Enthusiasm and experience in outdoor adventure is a must.  Applications are accepted in the fall semester.  Interviews are conducted in November.  New hires are trained  throughout the spring semester. 
  • Clean driving record is mandatory.

    • RESUME primarily focusing on your outdoor experience (adventure club, Boy or Girl Scouts, etc.)

Team Facilitator-$8.25/hour

  • Responsibilities: Meet prospective groups to begin planning team workshops; assist in the final stages of planning sequences for scheduled events; prepare and organize activity equipment before scheduled events, and maintain equipment after use; Facilitate team workshops (indoor and/or outdoors) that include ice breakers, initiative and processing for diverse groups including youth and adult ranging from 4 to 30 participants; writing a workshop reports following the events; serving as a representative of Campus Recreation to participants; Demonstrating good judgment in regards to participant safety and wellbeing; willing and able to work in the cold, rain, and heat, as well as good weather

  • Requirements: NIU undergraduate or graduate student. Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role. Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual.

  • CPR and First Aid  - obtained by the end of the semester in which one is hired.
  • Willing and able to work in the cold, rain, and heat, as well as good weather.
