Peer Assisted Learning is NIU's FREE tutoring service. We provide one-on-one and small group tutoring for those students who are interested in regular, weekly tutoring assistance. You're matched with a trained peer tutor for weekly tutoring sessions. Sign up early in the semester - tutor availability may be limited during the last few weeks of the semester. PAL APPOINTMENT TUTORING: For REGULAR WEEKLY tutoring, you can come to the PAL office in Williston 100 to fill out a TUTOR REQUEST FORM & STUDENT CLASS & WORK SCHEDULE. After applying, you're matched up with an advanced NIU student who has completed CRLA (College Reading and Learning Assoc.) tutor training and who will help guide you through your course. Tutors are assigned to students based on availability. (Usually within one week of your application.) When your tutor calls, you both decide when and where to meet. Students are eligible for a maximum of three hours of tutoring per week, per course. In order for tutoring to be effective, you should meet with your tutor at least once a week through the semester. If you miss 2 tutoring appts. you will be dropped from 1:1 tutoring, but can continue to get help at one of the walk-in tutoring centers.
