It's Time to Waive or Enroll in our Student Insurance Program.
Students taking 9 or more credit hours are automatically billed $1,378.00 for student health insurance for fall 2024. You can find more information regarding the plan on our website. If you have comparable insurance and have not yet canceled the plan, the United Healthcare Student Resources is now open until Sept. 30, 2024. This is an online process only. Once you complete the waiver, and it’s accepted the charge for insurance will be removed from your student account.
The waiver deadline is firm, therefore if you do not waive the student health insurance by Sept. 30, you will be enrolled for semester coverage under the plan, and no reimbursements will be given. Question can be emailed to studentinsurance@niu.edu.
Students taking less than 9 credit hours are not automatically enrolled in our student health insurance program. However, if eligible, you do have the opportunity to voluntarily enroll for coverage. The fall open enrollment period for our optional dental, vision, teledoc and health insurance plans administered by Benefit Partners Technology is open until Oct. 31, 2024. Learn more about enrolling in our student health insurance program.

"Although it’s a smaller school, I've found comfort in many aspects of NIU. Being able to call this place home has been a great blessing. I love all the small DeKalb perks that no one would understand unless they went to NIU."

"My biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of resources and get involved as you are able. I attended college on a scholarship for low- and limited-income students in the state of Indiana and was a bit lost when I first went away to college. I quickly became connected with student organizations and secured on-campus employment, which helped me understand everything that was available to me. My last piece of advice would be to find a mentor. My mentor was one of my greatest supports."
