Connecting through culture video

Connecting through culture.

The academic culture centers at NIU provide programs and events that support and engage students, faculty and staff on topics related to their professional, cultural and social interest. These centers are often a “home away from home" for students seeking ways to unite with students who share their culture. The centers are spaces where you can celebrate and honor traditions and connect with students and faculty in a warm and intellectually engaging and inviting environment.

Notices

Cast your vote for our first "Pride with Purpose" shirt.

The Pride with Purpose annual shirt sale is a new Homecoming tradition and a collaborative effort between NIU Athletics, the NIU Foundation, the NIU Alumni Association and the Division of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications. Each year, the campus community will vote for the design of the shirt and the winning design will be produced in limited quantities and be made available for purchase for one year.  All proceeds from the sale of the shirts will be used to support NIU’s general student scholarship fund.

Those who vote will be entered into a drawing to win a NIU Huskies football helmet or two tickets to a home football game of their choice.

Help improve the undergraduate experience of Huskies.

The Committee for the Improvement of the Undergraduate Academic Experience (CIUAE) is looking for up to six (6) student representatives to help improve the student experience at NIU. This semester the committee will focus on several topics, including the mental health needs of students.

Student input is vital for the committee and this leadership opportunity provides you the unique opportunity to make a difference at NIU. You’ll be able to share your perspectives and identify specific issues that you think need improvement. In addition to helping address specific issues, you’ll also help select the recipients of our yearly Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and Instruction Award winners.

Student representatives are needed from the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Law and the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The CIUAE meets on the first Monday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m.. The first meeting this semester will be on Sept. 12. If you are interested, or have questions, please contact Professor Jennifer Gray (j-gray@niu.edu) or Associate Professor Katja Wiemer (katja@niu.edu).

Complete your “Be Well, Do Well” online education.

If you're a first-year student or newly entering transfer student, you are required to complete the “Be Well, Do Well” training video and quiz by the end of the fifth week of the semester. The training video is about 90 minutes long, and you can leave the training and resume watching it, as needed. Then, you’ll complete a 10-question multiple choice quiz to test understanding of the material presented in the training.

As a new part of the Huskie family, you will learn that Huskies are there for each other and help one another to thrive. We know that college can be a stressful and challenging time. The best way to make the most of your time at NIU and beyond is to “be well” by taking care of yourself, supporting your fellow Huskies, reaching out for help and doing what you can to support your overall wellness. We know that when you feel well, you do well.

To complete the training:

  1. Log-in to Blackboard.
  2. Go to “Organizations” in the navigation, and choose “Be Well, Do Well: Healthy Decision-Making for College Students.”
  3. Watch the video (about 90 minutes).
  4. Take the quiz.

If you have questions about the training, please email bewell@niu.edu.

Tip from a Huskie

"My favorite spot on campus is the Holmes Student Center. After I get my drink at the Starbucks inside, I like to find a comfortable seat to relax, talk to others and listen to music during my free time before classes. I am drawn to this space because it is welcoming and very collaborative."
