Monday-Thursday (closed Friday)
9 am – 4 pm (check for class usage posted in hall each semester)

The lab was founded in February 1996 by Professor Charles Cappell with partial support provided by the National Science Foundation, Division of Undergraduate Education, and matching funds from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University.

The Sociology Lab:

  • Supports the teaching of quantitative and qualitative research skills. Our computer network provides statistical packages and other useful software: SPSS, R-studio, HyperResearch, MS 365 Office, QGIS.
  • Provides space for classroom teaching; professors can book a time for their class to use available software and dedicated computers.
  • Has Sociology Tutors on staff to assist with assignments, study skills, or test preparation.
  • Offers workshops for extra skill set training and career preparation, such as resume writing.
  • Presents Alumni Talks in collaboration with the Sociology Club and the Alumni Committee.
  • Organizes Research Groups: students work as a team in the lab to conduct a content analysis of media sources. The data collected is presented at the Sociology Symposium in the Spring.
  • Maintains a collaborative and social space for students. Come enjoy socializing, strategizing, free snacks, coffee, or tea in our lounge, or use our seminar table for group work.
