Why Public Administration?

Career Opportunities
Graduates of our highly ranked M.P.A. program can expect excellent job prospects across federal, state, and local government, as well as in the private and non-profit sectors. Our alumni work in a wide range of administrative fields, including law enforcement, fire services, public works, emergency management, finance, community development, human resources, and economic development.
Mid-Career Program
Many of our students have extensive experience in government roles and are seeking career advancement. The Department offers evening classes at the Naperville campus, meeting once a week for eight weeks. Students can complete two courses per semester while working full-time. For those who need even greater flexibility, we offer an online asynchronous program, providing the same high-quality instruction and faculty support in a format that allows students to complete coursework on their own schedules.
Pre-Career/Internship Program
The M.P.A. Internship Program, established in 1963 with the City of DeKalb, has long been a cornerstone of our program. It continues to shape public service leaders in Illinois, the Midwest, and beyond. This program is specifically designed for students without previous public service experience, offering hands-on learning in public management.
Students who have fewer than two years of professional public sector experience must complete an internship as part of the M.P.A. program. Upon acceptance, students interview for a paid internship that lasts throughout their time in the program. Interns are assigned substantial research and administrative responsibilities by supervisors in local government or nonprofit organizations. The two-year placement provides valuable organizational insight and benefits both the student and the host agency.
This internship experience immerses students in day-to-day public management, giving them practical exposure that complements their coursework. Interns engage in diverse assignments, which may include budgeting, policy analysis, community outreach, or program evaluation—depending on the needs of the host organization.

Interns may also work full-time during the summer or semester breaks, depending on the site.
Wages range from $16 to $23 per hour, with an average rate of $20.47. Employers set their own pay rates. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from internship sites.
