Admission Requirements for NIU's Online Ph.D. in Instructional Technology
You’ll apply through the Graduate School. Your application materials will include:
- Transcripts
- Personal statement that supports your interest in the program
- Three letters of recommendation
- A writing sample that demonstrates research and writing skills. Examples of writing samples include, but are not limited to:
- An academic or professional writing sample that includes research and citations.
- An academic writing sample from a master’s degree program course.

Yes! The entire doctoral program, including seminar courses, dissertation writing, and the dissertation defense, can be completed fully online.
The Ph.D. program is highly individualized. Students work with a faculty advisor to select the courses that best fit their academic and research goals. For more information, please contact our Online Student Success Specialist.
Letters of recommendation do not need to come from academic sources. They can come from coworkers, employees, supervisors, club leaders, or volunteer organizations. Choose people who can speak to your abilities, experience, and determination. Letters from family members are not accepted.
