Ethics Training FAQ's

Q: When will I complete the training?

  1. Training will be available for all Northern Illinois University employees between October 16 and November 14, at 5:00 p.m. There will be no extensions of this deadline.

Q: What is the training format?

  1. The training is a self-administered, interactive program that is accessed through a computer connected to the Internet. The training consists of interactive scenario-based lessons, questions, resources and references.

Q: Does the training include a quiz?

  1. No. The training incorporates interactive activities and questions within the content of the training module. These questions are intended to ensure that every employee understands the content of the training. The questions are interspersed in the text, and you will need to answer any questions before you can move forward in the training.
    At the end, are two “Certification Questions”, which you must answer in order to complete the training.

Q: I work for the university but do not have access to a computer. How will I access the training?

  1. You should ask your department or your supervisor about arrangements being made for your department. It is recommended that you complete the training during your work time. You have the option to do the training from home but if you are an hourly employee, you will not be compensated for the time. Call 753-9192 for assistance in finding a computer location on campus if one is not available in your work area.

Q: I have taken ethics training in the past. Do I have to take this training as well?

  1. Yes. The state requires that all employees participate in the on-line training annually. This is the only training approved by the Executive Inspector General’s Office for this purpose. In some instances, based on your date of employment you may not have been entered into the database for the online training. Your responsibility is complete the Ethics Training for New Hires.

Q: When I was hired I read and signed an “Ethics Training for New Hires”. Do I still need to take on-line ethics training?

  1. Yes. New employees must complete the “Ethics Training for New Hires” when hired and also participate in annual on-line ethics training, if your name was in the database.

Q: Can I take the training at a different time than October 16 through November 14?

  1. No. All NIU employees who are registered must complete the training during this 30-day period. The site will not be available after 5:00 p.m. on November 14.

Q: What are the hours when the training is available on-line?

  1. The state training site is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the scheduled period, except for possible system maintenance activities.

Q: How will training be provided to new employees hired after the program begins?

  1. Employees hired or processed after September 14 will be contacted within 30 days of their hire date, and will be asked to complete a paper-based form of ethics training. They will return a signed form to the Ethics Training Administrator documenting their completion of this off-line training.

Q: What if an employee cannot successfully complete the training due to a literacy need or other issue?

  1. Employees with literacy issues should contact the University Ethics Training Administrator Karen Smith at 753-9192 for assistance.

Q: What could happen if I hurry through the Ethics Training?

  1. The time you spend on the ethics training and its activities may be monitored. Some state employees have had their results invalidated for failure to carefully read and review all of the program’s training material.

Q: Do I need to remember my password?

  1. Yes. You will need your password again if you do not finish the training, forget to print your certificate of completion, or need to go back to the training module for any reason. The state issues new passwords annually so it will not be necessary to remember the password for next year. Your default password for this year is ethics#123 . After entering this password, you will be asked to change your password to a new, personal one, with at least six characters, one of which is a number. Make it easy to remember in case you have to go back. You will not use this password next year.

Q: Can I use my Outlook ID to log into Ethics Training?

  1. No. The State instructs all our employees to use as their issued log on ID based on a formula with first name last name, date and month of birth. Sometimes hyphenated names, two names, Jr. and other parts of a person’s name do not register accurately. If you have difficulty, contact the Ethics Training Administrator for assistance. Q: How soon after the training period begins should I take my training?

  1. It is recommended that you start your training as early as possible once the training period starts on October 17. Employees who delay in starting ethics training may find it difficult to finish ethics training before the November deadline. Individuals not completing the training could face fines and disciplinary action.

Q: What do I do if I am not pre-registered for Internet-based ethics training?

  1. Contact the Ethics Training Administrator at 753-9192 for information about the off-line training requirement.

Q: What do I do if my User ID does not match my current name?

  1. Complete ethics training using the User ID that was assigned to you and contact Human Resource Services staff to correct your employee records.

Q: What do I do if I work at another university, community college or state agency and took ethics training there?

  1. Some employees who also work at another university or state agency may have already taken their ethics training. The university is normally given a list of our employees who were registered to take ethics training with another school or agency. You may be asked to provide a copy of your Certificate of Completion to your department, or to the Ethics Training Administrator. You only need to complete annual ethics training at one employer. If you have any questions about your ethics training, contact the Ethics Training Administrator.

Q: Can I make a copy of the Internet-based training materials from the ETCC site?

  1. If necessary, employees may print only one copy of the materials, solely for their individual personal reference, for ethics training purposes only. Materials may not be duplicated, distributed or disclosed to anyone else. The training materials are protected by copyright.
