Summary

Laying the groundwork for an EMS implementation is the foundational step in the EMS process. This step involves identifying organizational needs, establishing an EMS team, conducting a preliminary review of the system for which EMS has to be implemented and developing an environmental policy for the system. This is the step where teamwork, administrative support, budgeting, and employee buy-in can make or break the EMS initiative. This is also the step where one can exercise leadership skills, teamwork, and commitment to the environment. The necessary groundwork must be completed in this step before the planning step is initiated next.
