Training EMS Personnel

Training of EMS personnel should be an ongoing activity as EMS steps are implemented and existing procedures are revised. All EMS personnel should first be trained on EMS principles, the organization’s environmental policy, and objectives. Personnel may have to be trained on:

  • organizational structures, and communication and reporting lines,
  • environmental regulations and laws applicable to the organization,
  • techniques for recognizing, documenting, and reporting problems,
  • technical skills needed for solving the problems,
  • procedures to implement operational controls developed for solving the problems,
  • documenting skills to record and disseminate information, and
  • supervision and communication skills.

The type and frequency of training needed may depend on individual responsibilities, and those with critical responsibilities can be required to attend periodic refreshers to make sure they are keeping current with the policies and procedures. Personnel should also be allocated adequate work time to participate in training programs.

Summary

The “Do” step is where the actual pollution prevention and control activities are implemented in an EMS through appropriate operational controls. The “Do” step also ensures the system can handle emergencies and accidents, and has the necessary organizational structure, document control, and training of employees. Cost-benefit analysis is one of the important skills necessary in this step for selecting the best alternatives.
