Printers Down in Creative Services: Plan More Time for Printing

Unfortunately, the aging printers in the Creative Services department are now inoperable. Our team has quickly made arrangements with offsite printers so that we can continue to meet our clients’ printing needs; however, please know that the printing and production of projects that we would normally print in house will now require 5- 10 days from the time the designer submits the final design to the printer. Please build this extra time into your timeline for all projects you submit to the Creative Services department. Our designers will do their best to help you estimate the time required for all projects at the outset of any project to better help all clients meet their deadlines.

Please direct all questions about this change to production to Robin Boyko, director of University Marketing & Brand Management at rboyko@niu.edu.

Operating Staff Council calls for candidates.

Transition to Blackboard Ultra Course View timeline.

Since it’s introduction to NIU in 2019, Blackboard Ultra Course View evolved from a core set of essential features to a robust learning platform with over 50 additional features added, most planned for summer and fall 2022. At the same time, Blackboard guaranteed that Original Course View will remain available through the end of 2023. Because Blackboard is used by nearly 100% of NIU faculty and students, we are providing sufficient time to make the transition to the Ultra Course View.

The plan is full migration to Ultra Course View no later than Dec. 31, 2023. It is recommended that faculty plan to teach their fall 2023 courses in Ultra Course View. All spring 2024 courses will use Ultra Course View.

Learn more online about the transition to Blackboard Ultra Course View. Faculty, instructors and staff who want to make the transition for fall can apply for the Blackboard Ultra Transition Academy. The priority deadline for applications is April 15. Applications will be reviewed, and notifications of acceptance will be sent by April 22. Applications received after April 15 will be considered pending availability, and notifications of acceptance will be sent within one week of submission.

Those who have experience teaching in Ultra can apply to be Ultra Ambassadors.

Online Teaching Symposium call for proposals extended to April 8.

The Online Teaching Symposium is a two-day celebration of our outstanding faculty and instructors, an opportunity to connect with your colleagues in new ways and a dynamic learning experience you build to meet your personal learning needs. For 2022, we are excited to have both online and in-person components for the symposium for the first time since 2019. You can participate online Tuesday, March 24, or either online or in person Wednesday, March 25.

We are looking for NIU faculty and staff to share at the symposium their own experiences with online teaching. The proposal requirements are brief and informal, so no need to stress over the perfect title or abstract. Submission deadline is Friday, April 8. Learn more and submit a proposal at citl.niu.edu/ots.

Melanie Koss

University Honors salutes Melanie Koss with its Great Professor Award for 2022

Some people are born into their callings.

Consider Melanie Koss.

“I just grew up loving books. I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t a book lover. I learned to read very young, and even before I learned to read, I would carry around books and ‘read’ the pictures, according to my parents,” says Koss, a professor of Literacy Education in the NIU Department of Curriculum” and Instruction.
