Faculty encouraged to add their voice through committees of the university

University-level committee service provides an important opportunity for NIU faculty to take an active role in shared governance. It is through shared governance that faculty can impact campuswide academic decisions, help set the direction of NIU for the future and contribute to the promotion of academic freedom and productivity.

Soon the administration of NIU’s colleges and University Libraries will be reaching out to offer these opportunities to serve on a wide variety of committees, councils and boards for terms to begin in fall 2025. Faculty are encouraged to engage in this process and consider representing their college or University Libraries in this way.

Shared governance rests on the idea that the healthy functioning of our university is the shared responsibility of faculty, administration, staff, students and the Board of Trustees. Serving on these committees is one way for faculty to directly contribute to the health of our university

Contributions being accepted for the Civil Service Emergency Fund.

The Civil Service Emergency Fund was established in 2021 to assist employees experiencing financial hardship during the pandemic. However, economic hardship did not end with the pandemic. Civil service employees continue to need financial assistance. We have raised and distributed over $5,000 to our colleagues who endured financial emergencies. The challenge we face is sustaining the initiative.

We launched a campaign, raised a few hundred dollars and gave it away, but then we are out of money again and can’t help anyone!  This is no way to run a charitable fund.  We are adopting a proactive and innovative strategy by shifting our focus to a two-pronged approach. First, we are raising money through crowdfunding. This approach will give the emergency fund a solid foundation. The second is to appeal to our campus community to support the fund through ongoing payroll deductions. The goal is to sustain the emergency fund so that NIU civil service employees will have a resource to support them when times are hard. We cannot achieve that goal without your help.

Please contribute to the Civil Service Emergency Fund today — whatever you can afford — to get us to our $3,000 goal.  Please urge your fellow colleagues to do the same. You will see suggested levels, but you can contribute any amount.

Visit the Civil Service Emergency Fund page.

If you wish to initiate regular payroll deductions, please visit the Human Resource Services website and click the Forms and Documents button.

  • On the Forms page, click the All payroll forms drop-down menu and select the NIU Foundation link.
  • The link will open Kuali, the electronic payroll deduction form.
  • Under deduction details, click Start a new deduction.
  • Next, select Would you like to make a gift allocation to a cost center not listed in the drop-down menu above?
  • Under Other, write Civil Service Emergency Fund, the amount you want to have deducted.
  • If you wish for the deduction to be ongoing, leave the Total (Goal) Amount to Deduct
  • You can select any amount from $5 and up.

Every dollar makes a difference! We truly appreciate your support.
