Policy Library Update – Revised Policies

Three policy revisions are open to review and comment for a 30-day period. This provides our NIU community the opportunity to consider and respond to these revised policies before they take effect. The policies are:

  • Suspension or Closure of University Operations Pay and Benefit Policy.
  • Severe Weather Closure.
  • Essential Service Protocols.

To submit a comment, go to our policy library website. The revised policies will appear at the center of the screen. Click on “Comment on New/Renew Policies.” You will be able to review the policies and provide your comments. All comments are due by Friday, Dec. 16. If you have any questions, please contact university policy librarian Rebecca Hunt, Ph.D. at rhunt@niu.edu.

Supervisor Training Program Spring 2023 Cohort Group

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Training has a few seats remaining for our spring 2023 Supervisor Training Program cohort group. This 10-week training program is open to emerging, new and seasoned campus supervisors on campus. Our spring group will again be hosted in a virtual format on Teams. This group will meet weekly for lively discussion and to enhance skills in various supervision areas including onboarding, team building, managing challenging behaviors, conflict, evaluations and showing appreciation to your employees, as just a few highlights.

If you are interested in participating in our next cohort group, please contact our office to register at employeeassistance@niu.edu. If our spaces fill before we receive your registration, please contact our office and we will add you to our waitlist in case of vacancies or to be considered for a future cohort group.

Parking reminder for vehicles associated with your parking permit.

As we start a new semester, Parking Services sends a friendly reminder to all permit holders regarding the vehicles that are listed on your virtual parking permit. Below are a few key items to keep in mind when registering for your virtual parking permit and parking on campus: You cannot register a vehicle that belongs to another current student or employee. Exceptions are made for family vehicles; however, the vehicle cannot be registered to more than one virtual parking permit.

If you have more than one vehicle registered, please remember that you cannot have them both parked on campus at the same time. Doing so could result in both vehicles being fined.

The opportunity to register two vehicles under a single virtual permit is meant to provide convenience for using different vehicles at different times, not for both vehicles to be used at the same time. For more information on Parking Services policies, please visit our website or contact Parking via phone at 815-753-1045 or by email at parking@niu.edu.

New NIH Proposal Requirement – Data Management and Sharing Plans

Principal investigators who plan to submit research proposals on or after Jan. 25, 2023 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will need to include a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) with their application. This is a change in NIH policy and investigators who plan to work with NIH should become familiar with this new application requirement.

Additional information and resources are available on the Sponsored Programs Administration Newsblog.

Major electrical update in Swen Parson data center.

In order to continue to meet the needs of our university with a robust, highly-available, IT service portfolio, NIU’s primary campus data center will receive its first major electrical update in 20 years. Work will begin the evening of Dec. 11 and complete the evening of Dec. 18.

DoIT has taken all the precautions to minimize the risk of service disruptions associated with this major update.

If you have any questions or concerns, please submit a ticket with the service desk via Self-Service Portal or at ServiceDesk@niu.edu.

Applaud a Colleague

Applaud a Colleague is a show of appreciation for those coworkers who go above and beyond. These are just a few of the employees throughout the university that go the extra mile:

  • Karina DeGaetano

  • Eric Glasby

  • Kari Hickey

Read recent applause and applaud a colleague for a job well done.

Go paperless! Elect to receive your 2022 W-2 electronically.

The Payroll office will process and mail calendar year 2022 W-2s by the Internal Revenue Service’s deadline of January 31, 2023. These tax forms are required to be mailed to an employee’s home address unless the employee elects and consents to receiving the form electronically.  When you opt to receive your W-2 form electronically, you will have convenient, secure access to your tax information as soon as it has been produced instead of waiting for the forms to arrive in the mail. The deadline to elect and consent to receiving your 2022 W-2 electronically is Friday, January 6, 2023.

To elect and consent to receiving your 2022 W-2 electronically, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to MyNIU.
  2. Click on the "MyNIU Human Resource System" panel.
  3. Login with your NIU User ID and password.
  4. Select the "Payroll" tile.
  5. Click on “W-2/W-2c” on the left menu bar.
  6. Click on “W-2/W-2c Consent.”
  7. To receive your W-2 electronically, check the box next to the message that reads “I consent to receive W-2 or W-2c forms electronically.”
  8. To complete your request, click the Submit button.

If you have previously consented to only receive your W-2 form in electronic format through MyNIU, you do not need to take any action. Questions regarding this information can be directed to payroll@niu.edu.
