Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP)

The Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP) brings 60 young people from Southeast Asia to the United States each year through a U.S. State Department grant. Participants learn about diversity and cultural appreciation, community action and activism, and networking and collaboration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The program utilizes an active approach that includes community service, field trips to US sites and schools, group projects, classes, American family home stays and community engagement.

Plans are underway for the 11th session of SEAYLP, April 2-26. Participants from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will travel to NIU to engage in courses and workshops on access and equity, green technology for economic growth, security, leadership, teambuilding and cultural diversity, concluding with a three-day study tour of the nation’s capital.

American high school students with community service and leadership experience are invited to be part of the program for three days, which includes a Global Youth Leaders Camp and the study tour to Washington, D.C.

SEAYLP Host Family Experience

NIU is recruiting families in the DeKalb-Sycamore community to host Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program participants for one week (April 13-20). For many participants, the host family experience is the most meaningful part of their time here. Host homes provide a place for participants to develop one-on-one relationships with Americans and to understand the diversity of American culture. What's it like? Read about it in NIU Today!
