James M. Banovetz

James Banovetz received his M.A.P.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. An honorary member of the International City Management Association, he founded NIU's Center for Governmental Studies, established the university's Master of Public Administration program, chaired the Department of Political Science during 1972-79 and directed the Division of Public Administration from 1979-98. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and has been president of Pi Alpha Alpha, the national honorary society in public administration. He has held leadership positions in the American Society for Public Administration and the National Association for Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, and has served on the editorial boards of Public Administration Review, Illinois Issues and other journals. He has drafted forms of government for a number of Illinois cities, and served as a consultant to national, state, and local government agencies and university graduate programs in public administration. He is currently editing the policy newsletter, Policy Profiles. His current research focuses on local government management problems, local government form and structure and Illinois' system of home rule.
