The Plant Sciences Program includes faculty with broad interests who contribute to diverse areas of plant research. Individual laboratories focus on plant community interactions, plant viruses, evolution and phylogenomics of grasslands, evolution of photosynthetic systems, biofuel production, plant genome sequencing, plant reproduction, characterization of plant proteins, and computational plant biology. Students in the plant sciences obtain specialized training needed for technical positions in the plant molecular laboratory, floristic identifications in field surveys, plant bioinformatics, faculty positions in botany at community colleges or universities, or to enter programs for further graduate study.

Graduate students pursuing research related to plant molecular biology and bioinformatics are eligible for the annual competition for the Sidney Mittler scholarship for the outstanding student in genetics.
