Fun, hands-on learning for all ages at STEM Fest, Sept. 19

STEM Fest 2026 presented by Meta

Bring your family and join us for a free family festival celebrating STEM and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math)! STEM Fest is Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the heart of campus: the MLK Commons, the Holmes Student Center, Founders Memorial Library and Swen Parson Hall.

  • Play with blocks at the Tot Spot.
  • Visit the Prairie Research Institute Traveling Science Center.
  • Don’t miss the annual weather balloon launch on MLK Commons at 11 a.m.
  • Visit the “Haunted Physics Lab” for hands-on activities involving light, phosphorescence and lasers.
  • Drive robots, build electrical circuits, see hands-on chemistry experiments.
  • Interact with scientists and explore STEM careers.

Altgeld Hall: A Guided Tour of NIU's Landmark and Its Legacy Makers

For 127 years, Altgeld Hall has stood as a testament to philanthropy, educational opportunity, artistic craftsmanship and architectural beauty. During this exclusive tour, guests will explore historic spaces throughout the building, learn how they have evolved over time and gain insight into the people whose vision and leadership helped establish NIU.

Join NIU Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor Alicia Schatteman for a guided tour exploring the history, architecture and enduring impact of this treasured campus building. On Saturday, Oct.10, Schatteman will host two 45-minute tours, with the first session beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the final one at 11:30 a.m.

Homecoming Volunteers Needed

We hope you are making plans to join us during the week of Oct. 5 - 11, 2026. If you would like to volunteer to help with these special events, you should communicate with your supervisor about release time or flexible hours. With supervisor approval, and assurance that appropriate coverage is maintained for the unit/department, all employees are encouraged to volunteer and participate in Homecoming week activities. We hope you'll help us welcome Huskies back to DeKalb for our 119th Homecoming.

BOT and Presidential Professorships Nominations Now Being Accepted.

Nominations for the 2027 Board of Trustees and Presidential Professorships are now being accepted. Please consider nominating a colleague for one of these prestigious awards. 

More information about each award and the criteria and procedure for nomination is available by visiting the links below.

  • Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professorships
  • Presidential Teaching Professorships

All professorships share the same nomination deadline of Monday, October 5, 2026, followed by a Monday, November 9, 2026, deadline for full application materials.

Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award Nominations Now Being Accepted.

Nominations are now open for the 2026-2027 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards. Each academic or academic support unit is invited to nominate two outstanding graduate teaching assistants, one at the master’s level and the other at the doctoral level, for the awards. Nominations can be submitted by the department chair/school director or designee.

Nominations are due Friday, Oct. 16, 2026. More information about the award and the nomination process can be found at go.niu.edu/outstanding-ta-award.

Huskies Get Hired is a One-stop Resource for Student Employment

Please encourage your students to make Huskies Get Hired part of their career routine. This online career platform connects NIU students with opportunities while providing access to valuable career resources and support.

Through Huskies Get Hired, students can:

  • Search and apply for on-campus positions, internships, part-time jobs, and full-time career opportunities
  • Register for career fairs, workshops, and employer events
  • Connect with employers recruiting NIU students
  • Schedule appointments with Career Services counselors for personalized career guidance

Do you have a student employment opportunity within your department? As part of NIU's hiring process, all student employment positions are required to be posted in Huskies Get Hired. Career Services can help you post your position and connect you with qualified NIU students seeking on-campus employment opportunities.

Career Services will also be hosting two Huskies Get Hired training webinars this year for employers and campus partners. If you are interested in learning more about using the platform, posting opportunities, or maximizing your engagement, we would love for you to attend. These are on Friday, Sept. 18 and Thursday, Nov. 12.

Music Classes for Our Littlest Huskies Starting Soon at the NIU Community School of the Arts!

There is still time to enroll the littlest Huskies ages 1 to 7 for their first music classes at the NIU Community School of the Arts! 

Piano Starter class offers a great opportunity for kids ages 5 – 7 to learn their first piano skills in a fun small-group environment with an accomplished piano teacher.

Toddlers ages 1 - 5 sing, dance, play and have fun in CSA Prelude and Development children’s music education classes. Sign up today and bring your kids to their first music class beginning on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Suzuki music instruction is a popular option for aspiring violin students and their parents – the fall Suzuki session begins soon!

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide leadership in carrying out all administrative functions of the Department of Psychology. The person in this position provides administrative supervision of the daily activities of the department and its staff.

Residential Dining Services Seeking Internal Applicants for Retail Dining Office Manager

This position reports the Director of Retail Dining and provides office support for Dining operations. Essential responsibilities of this position include administrative support to the Director of Retail Dining and Retail Dining Manager. Assisting other dining office managers with payroll and other employee paperwork as well as dealing with highly confidential and sensitive issues.
