Updates for Community College Partners

Greetings,

At NIU, we’re continuing to expand pathways that help your students move forward with confidence. Including growing online programs, a new partnership with Fermilab and the introduction of our flexible, part-time J.D. in Naperville, NIU is creating more accessible, career-aligned options for learners at every stage.

We’re also investing in the future pipeline. Growing STEAM partnerships are engaging hundreds of students through hands-on learning, mentoring and summer programs.

At the same time, initiatives like a collaboration with the Illinois State Police are opening new doors for working professionals, with credit for prior learning that accelerates degree completion in public service fields.

And across campus, as the second highest producer of teachers in Illinois, we remain committed to preparing future educators and leaders with the skills and support they need to succeed.

Our confirmation deadline for fall enrollment is Aug. 15. We encourage admitted students still deciding to take their time, but confirming early means better access to transfer orientation dates, housing options and course selection.

A valuable part of the Huskie experience, transfer orientation helps students connect with academic advisors, register for classes, plan their summer and learn about campus resources such as our Pre-Orientation Program (POP). By registering early, they can build their academic schedule and support network with greater confidence and flexibility.

To support their decision-making, we offer numerous resources and a variety of visit options, including Transfers Get Information Fridays (TGIFs), campus tours and appointments with admissions counselors.

NIU has teamed with Fermilab to offer a new quantum science program in the fall semester of 2026, giving students hands-on experience in one of the fastest-growing fields in technology. The collaboration connects classroom learning with real-world research opportunities, helping prepare graduates for careers in quantum computing and advanced scientific innovation. We continue to create flexible pathways for learners at every stage.

NIU College of Law recently launched a new, part-time J.D. program in Naperville, designed for working professionals and nontraditional students seeking a more flexible path to earning a law degree through evening courses and a supportive structure.

In addition, our university has partnered with the Illinois State Police to help officers advance their education and careers through a new Credit for Prior Learning agreement. Under the partnership, ISP Academy graduates admitted to NIU can earn nine credit hours toward degrees in Public Service Leadership, Criminology or General Studies.

The agreement, recently highlighted on the ISP website, recognizes the rigorous training completed through the ISP Academy while creating a more efficient pathway for students pursuing careers in public service and law enforcement.

NIU STEAM continues to spark curiosity and build college and career confidence for local students through its expanding partnership with DeKalb School District 428. Featured recently in NIU Today, the partnership now reaches hundreds of students, from elementary through high school, with hands-on STEAM experiences, mentoring, and opportunities to connect with NIU students, faculty and campus spaces.

STEAM’s many summer learning opportunities introduce students to science, technology, engineering, arts and math through engaging activities. Along the way, students begin to see themselves as future college students. Along with immersive summer camps, NIU STEAM offers educator resources and community events like STEM Fest, returning Sept. 19.
