The Health Services radiology department is available to all on-campus, fee-paying students at NIU. Radiology performs electrocardiography as well as general diagnostic, fluoroscopic, and sports medicine x-ray examinations (when ordered by a Health Services physician) at no cost to the student.
Most x-ray exams do not require appointments. However, fluoroscopic x-ray exams do require appointments. If a student fails to keep an appointment, and does not cancel the appointment, a missed appointment fee is charged.
All x-rays are read by board certified radiologists. The radiologists who read the Health Services x-ray films are the same radiologists who service area health care facilities. All x-rays are read daily, and the referring Health Services physician has results of the examination within 24 hours. Results are reported to the student by the Health Services physician.
Copies of x-ray films are available upon request for students who require additional care outside Health Services. A nominal fee is charged for copies of x-ray films.
The radiology department is staffed by licensed technologists who meet standards set by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The x-ray department is licensed by the IEMA Division of Nuclear Safety. In addition, the radiology department is inspected annually by a health physicist and meets or exceeds standards set by the IEMA Division of Nuclear Safety.
