V.A.S. Advocacy Team

Victim Advocacy Services Advocacy Team

Victim Advocacy Services Advocacy Team (A-team) is here to educate Northern Illinois University students, faculty, and staff on sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking. The A-team is comprised of the Victim Advocacy Services Graduate Assistant and volunteers who are passionate about educating and advocating for those who may have been victimized.

What is the A-team?

  • The A-team includes the VAS project director, coordinator, graduate assistant, and volunteers who are passionate about educating and advocating for those who may have been victimized.
  • The A-team volunteers are dedicated individuals who encourage others to advocate for those who are being victimized on campus.
  • VAS serves as an initial contact to ensure students are assisted in receiving the appropriate support, advocacy and resources related to the four focus areas. Thus, the volunteers serve as a peer-to-peer link for students.

Expectations of the A-team volunteers:

  • The A-team uses a peer-to-peer connecting opportunity, called “VAS On the Move,” to do the following:
    • Visit the residence halls, various classes and organization meetings to educate students on the four focus areas of VAS.
    • Inform students about their options and services available and how and where victim/survivors can seek help, support, and resources on campus and in the community.
    • Demystify stereotypical beliefs and myths associated with the four areas of VAS by being knowledgeable of the four areas and relevant current events.
    • Engage students in meaningful and intentional conversations around these issues.
  • The A-team participates in awareness month activities and supports other offices, student groups, divisional goals, and departmental activities that enhance the knowledge of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.
