The information is designed to assist students, faculty, with responding safely during a crisis situation.

Student insurance waiver deadline

If you are a student enrolled in nine (9) or more credit hours, you are automatically enrolled in our student health insurance program. The charge for student health insurance for fall 2023 is $1,296.00. You can find out more information regarding the plan at Aetna's web site.

If you have comparable insurance and would like to cancel the plan and have not already, the Student Health Insurance Enrollment and Waiver site is open until Sept. 30, 2023.  You will find the link to Enroll/Waive on the middle left of the page.  Please be aware you cannot use a cell phone to access the online waiver, it does not work correctly. Once you complete the waiver, the charge for insurance will be removed from your student account.

The waiver deadline is firm, therefore if you do not waive the student health insurance by Sept. 30, you will be enrolled for annual coverage under the plan.

If you are taking less than nine (9) credit hours, you are not automatically enrolled in our student health insurance program. However, you do have the opportunity to voluntarily enroll for coverage until Oct. 31, 2023. Have questions? Email us at studentinsurance@niu.edu.

Tip from a Huskie

"I have never purposefully missed a class here at NIU unless it was for travel purposes during softball season. Going to class directly correlates with succeeding in class. I also think it is a waste of money if you do not attend class!"
