Actuarial Science

Are you a future actuary? Students pursuing a major in actuarial science at NIU are in a pre-professional degree program. While the program is academically challenging, our students enjoy consistent opportunities for academic and professional development.

Many NIU graduates have found that our actuarial science program was well worth their time and financial investment. Our graduates have joined companies such as Allstate, GEICO, Mercer and Essence Health Care.

Explore the related links on this page or contact our undergraduate advisor and recruiting assistant for more information about NIU’s major and minor in actuarial science.

Internships

It is desirable to complete a summer internship while still in school. Most students of our actuarial science program become a summer intern at an insurance company after they pass at least one Society of Actuaries/Casualty Actuarial Society (SOA/CAS) actuarial examination.

Some of the key factors necessary to obtain an internship and/or an actuarial job are:

  • Having a good GPA (3.0—3.4 considered; 3.5—4.0 preferred).
  • Passing at least one or two SOA/CAS examinations.
  • Demonstrating communication and leadership skills.

Getting Involved on Campus

We encourage you to join the NIU Actuarial Club to meet other students who share your interests and aspirations. By consistently participating in club events and/or serving as a club officer, you’ll find opportunities to demonstrate effective communication and leadership skills that will benefit you in your interactions with potential future recruiters as well as in the workplace.
