Spring 2018 Scholarships

Richard J. Doherty and Jon F. Erickson Chicago Law Internship Scholarship - Deadline: March 1, 2018

  • Participate in a summer 2018 internship with the Chicago Bar Foundation, the Richard J. Daley Center Pro Bono Resource Center and the Office of the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
  • Awarded to full-time POLS major or minor between junior/senior year.
  • Grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
  • Submit application through Academic Works, including 1) one page single spaced essay that addresses what the applicant hopes to achieve by completing this internship and 2) two letters of recommendation at least one of which should be from a faculty member at NIU. The letters should address not only your academic achievements, but your character as well.
  • Certificate of award presented at spring department commencement.
  • $5000 applied to bursar account (Summer 2018).

Peters Scholarship for Outstanding Public Service - Deadline: March 1, 2018

  • Awarded to full-time junior or senior POLS major at time of award in good academic standing and who shows promise and demonstrates a desire to pursue a career in public service or administration.
  • Has made a significant contribution to public service through internship, political campaign, government or student government.
  • Submit application through Academic Works, including 1) one to two page essay describing their public service contribution and its impact and 2) one letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the public service performed.
  • Financial need may be considered when selecting recipients.
  • Previous recipients are not eligible.
  • Certificate of award presented at spring department commencement.
  • $1,000 ($500 in Fall 2018 and $500 in Spring 2019) applied to bursar account

Undergraduate Paper Award - Deadline: March 1, 2018, Noon

  • Awarded for outstanding papers written in conjunction with 300-400 level POLS courses or directed studies, and must be written in the previous calendar year.
  • Need not be a POLS major or have particular class standing.
  • Papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format to pols@niu.edu. Email subject line should be: POLS Undergraduate Paper Competition.
  • Cover page may not have student's name.
  • Student's name may not be listed in headers or footers.
  • There are no requirements concerning length of paper.
  • Certificate of award presented at spring department commencement.
  • $100 applied to bursar account (Spring 2018).

Inez Nelson Scholarship - Deadline: March 1, 2018

  • Awarded to full-time POLS major in good academic standing participating in the study abroad program at Oxford.
  • Scholarships available for up to three students.
  • Certificate of award presented at spring department commencement.
  • $2000 applied to bursar account (Summer 2018).
  • Submit application through Academic Works.
