February is Black Heritage Month!  

Join us in celebrating Black Heritage Month at NIU with a range of fun and educational events and activities throughout February. 

The Theme of Black Heritage Month for 2025 is African Americans and Labor. The Center for Black Studies in collaboration with university partners will host a series of events focused on the history of labor for African Americans and those in the Diaspora, as well as what labor looks like contemporarily. Developing a Great LinkedIn Profile Workshop – Career Fair Edition

In this workshop we will cover creating a LinkedIn profile that communicates your unique skills, accomplishments, and experiences to promote yourself to future employers. This presentation will go over document formatting guidelines and point you toward helpful resources. Thesis and Dissertation Submission Process (ProQuest) 

February 13, 4 PM to 4:30 PM 

All post-defense theses and traditional dissertations must be uploaded into ProQuest for final review. Uploading to ProQuest has no mandatory costs or fees, but you will have decisions to make regarding copyright, creative commons licenses, and purchasing bound copies of your work. Dissertation of Practice Submission Process (Huskie Commons)

Ed.D. candidates writing dissertations of practice must upload their post-defense papers into our institutional repository, Huskie Commons. This presentation will tell you what you need to know about creating an account in Huskie Commons, the submission process, and how to purchase a bound copy of your work if you choose.

Spring 2025 NIU Career Services' All-Majors Internship and Job Fair

NIU Career Services' All-Majors Internship and Job Fair  provides an opportunity for students, alumni and community members to connect with employers for internships, and full-time, part-time and student employment positions. Our All-Majors Internship and Job Fair is open to undergraduates, graduating seniors, graduate students, alumni and non-NIU candidates. Our fair is free for all candidates to attend. Reservations are not required. Parking is also free or you may take the 2R or 2L bus line. 

 

Spring 2025 Education Job Fair 

February 24, 9 AM to 12 PM - Convocation Center 

Career Services' Education Job Fair provides an opportunity to connect with employers seeking to fill education-related, full-time and part-time positions and internships. Participating employers would like to meet and hire teacher candidates in all PreK-12 disciplines, as well as related professional certification areas such as administration, school counseling, school social work, speech language pathology, OT, PT and nursing. This fair is open to undergraduates, graduating seniors, graduate students, alumni and non-NIU candidates. The fair is free for all candidates to attend. Reservations are not required. Parking is also free or take the 2R or 2L Huskie bus line.

8TH ANNUAL FIRST-GENERATION GRADUATE STUDENT SYMPOSIUM 

Join the Boston University Newbury Center, Duke University First-Generation Graduate Student Network, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS, along with our Cooperating Sponsor, FirstGen Forward, for our 8th annual symposium for graduate and professional students on February 7, 2025 via Zoom. This national symposium is open to any student who identifies as a current first-generation graduate or professional student and is studying any discipline.  

 

Attention STEM or Health Science field Graduate Students 

The Graduate School in partnership with the Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships and the Office of Federal Relations will sponsor one NIU graduate student studying in a STEM or health science field to attend the 2025 AAAS Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) workshop. This program is the nation’s premier science and technology policy and advocacy training workshop for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. During the workshop, students will learn about the structure and organization of Congress, the federal budget and appropriations processes, and tools for effective science communication and civic engagement. In addition, students will participate in interactive seminars about policymaking and communication. 

This year’s workshop takes place in Washington, DC, on April 6-9th, 2025. 

If you would like to attend, please apply by submitting 1) a letter of interest and 2) a letter of support from a faculty member. The letters should include:  

  • Evidence of academic success or potential within a STEM or health science discipline  
  • Why the student has an interest in learning about the role of science in policymaking, advocacy, and/or civic engagement  
  • How the workshop will contribute to their academic and professional goals

Graduate Student Judges Needed for the Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement! 

The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning is selecting up to 30 graduate student judges for the Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE) on April 29th, 2025. This is a professional development opportunity through which graduate students will gain valuable training and experience geared towards assessing undergraduate research accurately and constructively.  Selected applicants will participate in a 2-hour training, April 15, 9-11am, to prepare them to serve as a judge, including learning valuable skills in providing feedback and culturally informed and respectful engagement. Benefits for students include relevant experience for professional portfolio, LinkedIn Badge (Undergraduate Research Judge), and a line on their curriculum vita: “Selected as judge for the 2025 NIU Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement.” Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis between January and March 25. Additional questions can be directed to ugresearch@niu.edu.   

 

Preparing Future Faculty Conference 

February 21-22, 2025 

The goal of the Preparing Future Faculty Conference is to increase the representation and inclusiveness of historically underrepresented groups in higher education by preparing graduate students of all backgrounds in Illinois institutions for faculty careers. Participants will attend sessions focusing on faculty development and the rewards gained by helping students see representations of themselves in the classrooms and other areas of academic leadership. Application for Spring 2025 Graduation Deadline 

February 14 is the deadline to apply for Spring 2025 graduation for graduate students. Please note, there is a one-time, nonrefundable fee of $55. If you need to change your graduation date, you can do so here. You can find all important deadlines on the Graduate School website. 

 

Deadlines for Thesis- and Dissertation-Writing Students on Spring Graduation 

March 7, 2025: Last day for spring 2025 graduates to submit Request for Oral Defense of Thesis or Dissertation  

March 28, 2025: Last possible day for spring 2025 graduates to hold an Oral Defense  

April 4, 2025: Last day for spring 2025 graduates to submit Results of Oral Defense form

April 4, 2025: Last day for spring 2025 graduates to submit post-defense version of thesis or dissertation

I am active in the NIU Anime Association. I spent a year as president of the club and now offer assistance through guidance and mentorship for e-board members. I have been active in this guidance role for the past two to three years. This has enriched my Huskie experience as it has allowed me to help the club I grew to love flourish and continue to grow.
