Summary

The “plan” step is the key for establishing the environmental management program for an organization and it involves:

  • identifying the organization’s activities and their environmental aspects and impacts,
  • analyzing the significant impacts of those aspects,
  • prioritizing aspects and establishing targets for controlling impacts, and
  • setting up a management program to achieve the targets through appropriate actions.

The process of developing an EMS plan for an organization requires considerable leadership skills, teamwork, and knowledge of the organization’s activities and their aspects and impacts, applicable environmental laws and regulations, and environmental science.
