Notices

Parking permits on sale beginning July 15.

Parking permits for the next academic year (2025-2026) will be available online beginning July 15, 2025. Parking permits are virtual, so you will not receive a physical permit. Your license plate will act as your parking permit.

Our Customer Parking Portal provides convenient access to your parking account information. You can view your account, purchase a parking permit, make a ticket payment and update vehicle information.

A free parking option is also available. Those who register for this option will have a virtual green permit, which allows for remote parking in Lot K on the west side of campus, just off Lincoln Highway.

For those needing temporary parking, there are short-term parking options available.
Short-term permits can be purchased online, and options include daily, weekly and monthly permits. Short-term parking is also available at pay stations and via the AMP Park mobile app.

You can visit our Parking Services website for additional information. If you have any questions, please contact Parking Services at 815-753-1045 or parking@niu.edu.

Join a Mock Campus Visit Experience

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions invites you to participate in a mock campus visit, an opportunity to see how we welcome prospective students and share the NIU experience.

Date: Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Time: 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. (each session lasts approximately two hours).
Location: Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center.

Each visit begins with a 35-minute presentation from an admissions counselor, followed by a 75-minute walking tour led by one of our Northern Ambassadors (NIU tour guides). You’ll visit key campus locations, including Holmes Student Center, Altgeld Hall and Neptune Hall, to see a sample residence hall room.

This experience mirrors what prospective and admitted undergraduate students see during their visits. We’d love you to join us and gain firsthand insight into how we connect future Huskies with NIU.

Register for one session only:

  • 10 a.m. session.
  • 2 p.m. session.

Thank you for your support and go Huskies!

Sponsored Programs Administration announces upcoming budget management change

Effective July 1, 2025, SPA is changing its budget management approach for multi-year awards. Under our new operating practice, funding will be released one year at a time, even if the sponsoring agency awards the full amount for multiple years upfront. This approach is intended to minimize financial and compliance risks to the university and ensure responsible stewardship of sponsored project funds.

This change applies only to new multi-year awards made on or after July 1 and does not affect existing multi-year awards. Additionally, there are no changes to awards that are already structured to be funded incrementally by the sponsor; those will continue to follow their existing funding schedules.

For applicable new awards, the next year of funding will automatically be released three months before the end of the current year’s budget period, provided satisfactory progress has been made, required reports have been submitted and continued funding is available.

If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Blackwood-Williams at cblackwood@niu.edu.

Become a student organization faculty/staff advisor.

Are you interested in helping students outside of the classroom? We are looking for student organization faculty/staff advisors for the upcoming year.

The advisor role offers professionals opportunities to facilitate student development outside of the classroom. Often students will point to their experience in a student organization as the most meaningful experience in their college career. With that in mind, it is important to note that the role of the advisor is a very important one. Information or assistance of any kind is always available to faculty or staff members seeking more resources for advising student organizations.

If you are interested in becoming a student organization faculty/staff advisor, sign up today. You can reach out to Alex Pitner for more information.

Deadlines

NSF MRI internal proposal deadline.

The Office of Research Development (ORD) announces an internal competition for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) competition. NSF will accept four proposals from NIU.

The NSF MRI Program funds instrumentation for research in fields of science and engineering supported by the NSF Focus Areas. The instrumentation must have a broad base of users both within and external to NIU; regionally or nationally. The MRI program provides up to $4 million to acquire or develop a new instrument or upgrade an existing instrument. Proposals may request an award period of up to three years for instrument acquisition, and up to five years for instrument development. The instrument must be operational by the end of the award period. The program does not fund research projects or provide ongoing support for operating or maintaining facilities or centers.

The deadline to submit internal proposals is Aug. 27, 2025. Complete information on the internal competition and the NSF MRI program is available on our Office of Research Development Limited Submission Funding Opportunities webpage. Faculty who plan to submit a proposal to the NSF MRI competition must submit an internal proposal via NIU’s InfoReady internal competition portal.

Fiscal Year 2025 Due Dates for Accounting Transactions

We are preparing to wrap up another fiscal year here at NIU and it is important that we finalize the University’s FY25 financial statements in a timely manner. Please ensure that all FY25 transactions for your department are properly classified and submitted to the Accounting Office by the deadlines listed below:

All FY2025 cash and/or checks received must be deposited at the Bursar’s Officein Swen 235, and must be made in accordance with Bursar’s Office policy. June 30, 2025
All FY2025 approved invoices, check requests, and travel reimbursement requestsdue to Accounts Payable Services at AccountsPayableSrvs@niu.edu or LowdenHall 208. July 15, 2025
Year-end cutoff for posting all journal activity occurring in June from all fundsources due to General Ledger at JournalEntries@niu.edu. July 15, 2025

It is very important to note that transactions required to be processed in FY25 must be received by the requested due dates (do not hold FY25 documents even if the deadline has passed).

Please review all transactions and balances in applicable cost centers, paying particular attention to appropriate cut-off for transactions occurring during the months of June and July. Note that all goods and services received prior to June 30, 2025 must be recorded as an expenditure or accrued as a liability in the current fiscal year. Goods and services received after June 30, 2025 must be recorded as an expenditure in Fiscal Year 2026. University sales and services performed prior to June 30, 2025 must be recorded as revenue in the current fiscal year. University sales or services to be performed after June 30, 2025 must be recorded as revenue in Fiscal Year 2026. If you have any questions concerning how transactions should be recorded, please contact an Accounting Office representative.

This is also a good time to review any accruals in your cost centers to ensure they are up to date. All accrued balances should have support justifying why the amounts are accrued (receivable, payable, deferred, etc.) as of June 30, 2025. The Controller’s Office is responsible for all tuition accruals and no adjustments should be made to tuition accounts. Please reach out if you have any questions.

We appreciate your full cooperation as we work to ensure a successful close out of FY25. Should you have any questions about the year-end process, please email the Controller’s Office at ControllerOffice@niu.edu for assistance.
