NSF MRI internal proposal deadline.
The Office of Research Development (ORD) announces an internal competition for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) competition. NSF will accept four proposals from NIU.
The NSF MRI Program funds instrumentation for research in fields of science and engineering supported by the NSF Focus Areas. The instrumentation must have a broad base of users both within and external to NIU; regionally or nationally. The MRI program provides up to $4 million to acquire or develop a new instrument or upgrade an existing instrument. Proposals may request an award period of up to three years for instrument acquisition, and up to five years for instrument development. The instrument must be operational by the end of the award period. The program does not fund research projects or provide ongoing support for operating or maintaining facilities or centers.
The deadline to submit internal proposals is Aug. 27, 2025. Complete information on the internal competition and the NSF MRI program is available on our Office of Research Development Limited Submission Funding Opportunities webpage. Faculty who plan to submit a proposal to the NSF MRI competition must submit an internal proposal via NIU’s InfoReady internal competition portal.

We are preparing to wrap up another fiscal year here at NIU and it is important that we finalize the University’s FY25 financial statements in a timely manner. Please ensure that all FY25 transactions for your department are properly classified and submitted to the Accounting Office by the deadlines listed below:
Year-end cutoff for posting all journal activity occurring prior to June from allfund sources due to General Ledger at JournalEntries@niu.edu.
June 18, 2025 |
All FY2025 cash and/or checks received must be deposited at the Bursar’s Officein Swen 235, and must be made in accordance with Bursar’s Office policy.

All FY2025 approved invoices, check requests, and travel reimbursement requestsdue to Accounts Payable Services at AccountsPayableSrvs@niu.edu or LowdenHall 208.
July 15, 2025 |
Year-end cutoff for posting all journal activity occurring in June from all fundsources due to General Ledger at JournalEntries@niu.edu.
July 15, 2025 |
It is very important to note that transactions required to be processed in FY25 must be received by the requested due dates (do not hold FY25 documents even if the deadline has passed).
Please review all transactions and balances in applicable cost centers, paying particular attention to appropriate cut-off for transactions occurring during the months of June and July. Note that all goods and services received prior to June 30, 2025 must be recorded as an expenditure or accrued as a liability in the current fiscal year. Goods and services received after June 30, 2025 must be recorded as an expenditure in Fiscal Year 2026. University sales and services performed prior to June 30, 2025 must be recorded as revenue in the current fiscal year. University sales or services to be performed after June 30, 2025 must be recorded as revenue in Fiscal Year 2026. If you have any questions concerning how transactions should be recorded, please contact an Accounting Office representative.
This is also a good time to review any accruals in your cost centers to ensure they are up to date. All accrued balances should have support justifying why the amounts are accrued (receivable, payable, deferred, etc.) as of June 30, 2025. The Controller’s Office is responsible for all tuition accruals and no adjustments should be made to tuition accounts. Please reach out if you have any questions.
We appreciate your full cooperation as we work to ensure a successful close out of FY25. Should you have any questions about the year-end process, please email the Controller’s Office at ControllerOffice@niu.edu for assistance.
