Applications now being accepted for the 2024-25 Staff Professional Development Academy cohort.  

The Staff Professional Development Academy is a yearlong, cohort style program that both promotes professional development and creates a network of leaders across campus. We aim to have diverse cohorts with representation across campus and encourage staff at all levels to apply. Learn more about eligibility requirements and how to apply by visiting the Office of the President's website.

Deadline for applications is May 1, 2024.

Proposals now being accepted for 117th Homecoming grants. 

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2024 NIU Huskie Pride 117th Homecoming Grant Competition.

 

Do you have an idea for a homecoming event that you would like to see on campus, or want to enhance an existing homecoming event? The Homecoming Executive Committee invites all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to submit formal proposals for review! Homecoming will be October 13-20, 2024.

Great Colleges to Work For Survey now underway. 

All faculty and staff are encouraged to complete The Great Colleges to Work for Survey. The invitation to complete the survey will be sent to your NIU email account from surveys@modernthink.net today, Monday, March 18, 2024. The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete and your responses are anonymous and confidential. The deadline to complete the survey is March 29, 2024.

Open forums for College of Business dean candidates scheduled.

NIU faculty and staff members are invited to attend open forums with the finalists for dean of the College of Business.

 

Meeting sessions with the four candidates will be in person with a virtual attendance option, and are as follows:

  • Candidate #1 - 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 19, in Barsema Hall 300 or via Teams.
  • Candidate #2 - 11 a.m. to noon Friday, March 29, in Barsema Hall 301 or via Teams.
  • Candidate #3 - 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 3, in Barsema Hall 110 or via Teams.
  • Candidate #4 - 11 a.m. to noon Friday, April 5, in Barsema Hall 301 or via Teams.

OSC recreating a “Whom to Contact” list to facilitate the success of new employees.

As part of our ongoing efforts to support the retention of new employees and to facilitate their success in their new position, the Operating Staff Council’s Workplace Guidance Committee is recreating a comprehensive “Whom to Contact” list. This resource will provide valuable information to new employees, helping them quickly identify which department to contact for various needs and inquiries.

 

To ensure the accuracy and completeness of this resource, we need your help, Huskies. Please take a moment to provide details, via a brief survey, about your department including website address, email, phone number and the type of assistance you can offer.

 

Please note, only one submission per department/area is necessary. Thank you in advance; we appreciate your support.  

 

AI Researcher and AI Educator meet-ups

As AI becomes more prevalent, you are invited to join our idea-sharing sessions to identify expertise we have at NIU, discuss ways to best use AI and learn about the impact AI is having and will continue to have on higher ed.

 

AI Researcher meet-up: (RSVP by Monday, March 25)

In-person: 10 to 11:15 a.m. Friday, March 29; Virtual: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2

This meet-up is designed to bring together faculty who are conducting research regarding AI or who are interested in becoming involved in AI research to form an AI scholar network at NIU and foster collaboration.

 

AI Educator meet-up: (RSVP by Thursday, April 4)

In-person: 9 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 10; Virtual: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16

This meet-up is designed to bring together faculty who are integrating AI into the classroom or who are interested in identifying shared opportunities and challenges of AI in education and developing a network of support and collaboration.

 

RSVP for these events by contacting Andrea Guzman, associate professor of communication, at alguzman@niu.edu. If you are interested but cannot attend, please contact Andrea for more information. In-person meetings take place at the 71 North Partnership Studio. Coffee and tea will be served.

 

Anywhere Prints Update Project

The Anywhere Print Update Project is over 85% complete and is on track to complete the roll-out by the end of the month. Last week’s focus was on public-facing printers. There is signage placed at each printer with QR codes that will direct users to any instructions needed to print to the new Ricoh using Papercut or Web Print.

Service Learning and Community Engaged Scholarship: Free Interactive Workshops

Are you interested in engaging the community in your research, or getting the most out of your service-learning projects?

 

Join us for free interactive workshops with engagement executive in residence Lina Dostilio, Ed.D., on Monday, March 18. Learn more and register for the following workshops:

 

  • 10:30 a.m. to noon — Service Learning and Civic Engagement: Tips and Tactics for Maximum Impact.
  • 1:30 to 3 p.m. — Community-Engaged Scholarship: Enhancing Your Research and Creative Discovery through Community Engagement

 

Join us for one or both workshops in person in Altgeld Hall 315. All faculty and staff are invited to attend.

 

Professor Dostilio is vice chancellor of engagement and community affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also an associate professor of practice within the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations and Policy in the School of Education. Her research explores the community engagement profession in higher education and hyperlocal, place-based engagement.

 

Supportive Professional Staff Council Launches “Huskie High 5” Campaign

This year the number of applicants for the SPSC Dependent Scholarship Fund awards more than doubled. The increased student response is an indicator of the greater need among NIU students.   

 

To address that need we are launching the “Huskie High 5,” which is a donation campaign for NIU employees. The Huskie High 5 offers employees an opportunity to donate just $5 per pay period to the SPS Dependent Scholarship Fund via automatic payroll deductions. Each year, we award two separate scholarships. There is a $1,250 scholarship for a dependent of an SPS employee and a $750 scholarship awarded to a student that has been influenced by an SPS employee. Our goal is to increase our scholarship fund by raising an additional $5000 for next year’s fund to provide more scholarship opportunities. And yes, there are other donor options available, too!

 

As a bonus, employees that commit to giving by March 29 will be recognized as the “Inaugural Class of the Huskie High 5” at the SPS Awards Luncheon and presented with a Huskies paw shaped alloy lapel pin. Funding Available for Undergraduate Research  

Submissions for the Student Engagement Fund (SEF) and the Research, Engagement and Academic Diversity (READ) grant for summer and fall projects are being accepted through April 2. SEF provides funding for students working on faculty-mentored research projects in all areas, while the READ grant provides funding for projects focused on closing equity gaps, social justice and diversity, and social innovation or social entrepreneurship with a view to improving social and/or cultural issues and inequities.   

 

Faculty can apply for stipends to pay up to three undergraduate student researchers and to cover up to $500 in project supplies per student. Access full details and apply today.

 

Assessment and Learning Improvement Showcase planned for April 19.

Accreditation, Assessment and Evaluation is establishing an Assessment Circle to connect NIU assessment professionals and practitioners to develop a shared understanding of assessment and to create a community for sharing best practices for continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The Assessment Circle will host an Assessment for Learning Improvement Showcase that will provide space for conversation and sharing of practices among NIU faculty and others involved in assessment of student learning at NIU.

 

Join us for the Assessment for Learning Improvement Showcase on April 19, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon in Altgeld Hall, room 315.

 

This showcase is a forum for colleagues across campus to connect, learn and share application of best practices in assessment for student learning. It will be useful for faculty and administrators who are new to program level assessment or those who are working to make assessment more useful. The half day program will consist of an opening presentation on the assessment cycle, best practices, and challenges in assessment followed by three round-table discussions on specific practices employed by NIU faculty.

Rebuilding Democracy Lecture Series International Roundtable features discussion on climate change on March 20

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences proudly presents its Second Annual International Roundtable as part of their Rebuilding Democracy Lecture Series at 4 p.m. CDT March 20. The Roundtable showcases the research of college faculty in areas related to democracy and a global society. Read more.

Supreme Court

Supreme Court of Illinois will hear oral arguments at NIU on March 21

The Illinois Supreme Court will leave the Illinois Supreme Court Building in Springfield behind for a day and “ride the circuit” to hear oral arguments at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on March 21. Read more.
