NIU Libraries' virtual exhibit celebrates women in science.
“The Way of Progress was Neither Swift nor Easy” honors women of science and their innovative spirit — featuring not only towering figures such as the two-time Nobel Prize-winner, Marie Curie (1867-1934), and “first lady of physics research,” Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997), but also lesser-known scientists such as Fátima de Madrid (fl. 10th century CE), Alessandra Giliani (1307-1326), Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750-1848), Anandibai Joshi (1865-1887), Mary Agnes Meara Chase (1869-1963) and Katherine Johnson (1918-2020), as well as important women working in STEM today, such as Sau Lan Wu, (c. 1940s-), Mae C. Jemison (1956-), Ellen Ochoa (1958-), Cynthia Breazeal (1967-) and Emmanuelle Charpentier (1968-). This virtual exhibit is presented in honor of Women's History Month.

Seeking nominations for Lincoln Laureate
Each of the four-year, degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois choose one senior student to receive the prestigious Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Award. To make the nomination process more user-friendly, the nomination window opens now, and application materials can be submitted in parts and edited until the deadline window closes in early fall.
Students must be nominated by a department. Multiple departments can collaborate to nominate a specific student (appropriate when a student has more than one departmental home). Each department must submit a department nomination letter and an additional letter of support from a faculty or staff member.
All faculty are encouraged to put forward excellent nominees for consideration for departmental endorsement. Nominees must be seniors graduating from NIU during the 2022-2023 school year (August 2022, December 2022, May 2023).
For more information about the award and process, please visit the NIU Lincoln Laureate webpage. To nominate a student, please complete the electronic intent to nominate form by noon on Sept. 10, 2022. Upon completion of this form, nominators will receive a link to a OneDrive folder to upload candidate materials. For more information, please email Jason Goode at jason@niu.edu.
