Reminder that Election Day is Nov. 5, 2024: No classes, university open.
While there are no classes on Tuesday, Nov. 5, Election Day is a regular working day and is not designated as a holiday for university employees in Illinois. However, employees may request paid time off to vote in accordance with State of Illinois law. An Election Day Holiday had previously been passed by the State Legislature as a one-year measure for each of the 2020 and 2022 election years. Similar legislation for 2024 does not apply to colleges and universities. For this reason, the general election will be a regularly scheduled work day. Learn more about voting and election day by visiting the NIU calendar.

STEAM Studio grand opening starts a new chapter in Meta’s partnership with NIU to support STEM education in DeKalb
In late September 2024, DeKalb youth gathered with representatives from Meta, the City of DeKalb and Northern Illinois University to mark a new chapter in NIU’s partnership with the Meta DeKalb Data Center. The gathering celebrated the grand opening of the NIU STEAM Studio, a suite of learning spaces including classrooms and a makerspace in Swen Parson Hall, the home of NIU STEAM’s middle and high school afterschool programs. The programs – dubbed the Barb City STEAM Team – help to support science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) learning for DeKalb youth from underrepresented minorities through homework help, mentorship and hands-on STEAM learning projects.
