NIU Celebrates First-gen Week

During First-gen Week, campuses and communities come together to highlight the significance of this journey offering events, workshops and support networks that empower first-gen students. It’s a chance to share stories, build connections and acknowledge the immense strength it takes to break barriers and create new pathways for future generations.

This week also serves as a reminder that first-gen students bring invaluable perspectives and contribute to the diversity and richness of our educational environments. It’s about celebrating their accomplishments, providing mentorship and resources, and fostering an inclusive atmosphere where all students can thrive.

NIU Neurodiversity Resource Fair prior to Temple Grandin Lecture on Nov. 19

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, Temple Grandin will visit NIU to give a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. Prior to her talk, NIU STEAM will host a “Celebration of Neurodiversity Resource and Activity Fair.” Both events take place at NIU’s Holmes Student Center.

Temple Grandin is a distinguished professor of animal science at Colorado State University, as well as a world-renowned author and speaker on autism and neurodiversity. Professor Grandin will present a talk titled “Great Minds Are Not All the Same.”

Prior to Professor Grandin’s talk, NIU STEAM will host a free resources and activity fair from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to celebrate and support the many kinds of neurodiversity in our community. The fair will highlight the many resources available to support NIU students and community members who are neurodivergent, and their families. Activities will be available for all  ages — from preschool through college — including hands-on art projects, sensory bins and books related to neurodiversity from the NIU Libraries and DeKalb Public Library.

The events are free and open to the public, but space is limited, and registration is requested. Learn more and register at go.niu.edu/neurodiversity-fair.

Payment Request Submittal to Accounts Payable Services Prior to Winter Break Observance

Please submit all approved payment requests to be processed prior to university winter break by Dec. 2, 2024, to allow sufficient processing time.  Submittal to Accounts Payable Services by this date does not guarantee receipt of payment by year end.  Some factors that may delay payment processing include missing supporting documentation; invalid approvals; insufficient funds on purchase orders; noncompliance with state and university regulations; payments requiring new vendor setup; and volume of requests.  If you have any questions, please send an email to  AccountsPayableSrvs@niu.edu or call 753-1514.  Thank you.

Community Engagement Professional Development Free Brownbag Lunch Presentation

This casual lunchtime series is your chance to learn from NIU faculty about their experiences in community engaged research, teaching and collaboration.

At noon Nov. 21, don’t miss “Journey to Teach Scientific Argumentation: Lessons for Creating Mutually Beneficial Partnerships” with Professor Pi-Sui Hsu, Ph.D., NIU professor of educational technology, research and assessment, and 2024 Distinguished Engagement and Partnerships Professor.

For well over a decade, Professor Hsu has been partnering with middle school teachers and after-school educators in the U.S. and Taiwan. Her goal has been to test and improve methods for teaching scientific argumentation to middle school students, with a focus on educational technology. In this talk, Hsu will share the story of her collaborative research journey. She’ll share insights into how faculty can use fieldwork to build authentic, mutually beneficial partnerships. And she’ll answer faculty questions about their own potential collaborations.

Please join us in the HSC Illinois Room on the second floor of the Holmes Student Center. Hear Professor Hsu’s stories, ask your questions, make connections and leave with tools and inspiration to pursue your community engagement goals.
