PeopleSoft HR System maintenance scheduled.

The PeopleSoft HR system will be unavailable on Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. due to system maintenance.

 

MyNIU Student System maintenance scheduled.

The MyNIU Student System will be unavailable on Tuesday evening, Jan. 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. due to system maintenance.

 

Annual Commercial Card training to begin Feb. 1, 2024.

Card Services will be conducting our annual commercial card refresher training Feb. 1 through March 1. This training is required of all card holders, transaction approvers and proxies. More information will become available closer to the start date.

 

Participants needed for exercise study.

Are you currently physically inactive? Do you work out fewer than two times per week and are between 45 and 60 years old? You may qualify for this free, supervised, exercise research study conducted through the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Transform your body in 2024.

 

Exercise is medicine. Do you want to invest in yourself while contributing to scientific research? Then this Menopause Exercise study is for you. Increase your bone mineral density, metabolism and strength with a personalized and supervised exercise program offered right here on campus. If interested in participating, email rkowal1@niu.edu.

 

Alumni Day at the Huskie Food Pantry (8:30 to 11 a.m. or 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17)
Help our Huskie Food Pantry serve students during the first week of the semester, which is typically the hardest week for them to recruit student volunteers. NIU employees can use their Huskies Give Back (volunteer leave) time to support the pantry/closet, and our students, during a time when support is sorely needed.

Register for NIU Community School of the Arts Spring 2024 music lessons and classes.

Everyone can experience the arts this semester at NIU — registration at the NIU Community School of the Arts is open for spring. 

 

Piano and guitar group classes for adults make learning to play music a fun and more affordable experience. Keep your new year’s resolution to learn an instrument with weekly classes beginning in January.

 

Toddlers ages 1 to 5 sing, dance, play and have fun in CSA Prelude and Development children’s music education classes. Sign up today and bring your kids for their first music classes starting Sunday, Jan. 21.

 

Students of any age can learn to play a new musical instrument or brush up skills with private music lessons— sign up today and start learning in January.

 

Suzuki music instruction is another popular option for young beginning students of guitar, violin, and cello and their parents.  

 

Piano Starter class for kids ages 5 to 7, Symphonette strings for ages 8 to 16, CSA Steelband, and Sinfonia youth orchestra all begin new spring sessions soon.

2024-25 Newman Civic Fellowship nominations due Jan. 25, 2024

The NIU Newman Civic Fellowship Program offers students opportunities to expand their learning, make an impact and create meaningful professional connections.

 

Nominations are open for our 2024-25 program and will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024. Nominations may only be submitted by faculty or staff members. The fellow is announced by April.

Civil service and extra help employees are invited to complete our 2023 Civil Service Celebration Survey to help us plan for 2024. The administration has also asked for our Civil Service Celebration Planning Committee to provide some additional feedback, which has been included in this survey. Please note that all responses are anonymous and may only be submitted once.

Register today for Spring 2023 "Crucial Conversations" training.

We invite you to join Human Resource Services in one of our “Crucial Conversations” two-day, in-person training courses. Led by John Acardo, senior associate vice president and chief human resource officer, this course focuses on fostering effective communication and mastering dialogues that are crucial to an organization’s health and effective performance. If you have an interest in considering advancing your skills for engagement, efficiency and equity in your work, we encourage you to join us for “Crucial Conversations.” 

 

Dates: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 22 and 23, 2024.
Location: TBD. 

 

The cost for the two-day training is $350. This includes the course materials as well as breakfast and lunch. The presenter is not paid for this activity.

Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Insights

In March 2024 Northern Illinois University will undergo its regular ten-year comprehensive accreditation evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission. This is a rigorous and comprehensive examination of every aspect of the university’s structure and operations through an Assurance Argument and site visit.

 

If have have not reviewed Criteria 1 and 2, Criteria 3 and 4 or Criteria 5 there is still time to comment and provide evidence. Please comment and provide evidence for all five criteria by Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.

Financial Month End Close

The month of December is closing for all financial reporting activity at noon Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024. Journals not posted at that time will go into January business. Submit December journals before end of business Tuesday, Jan. 9.  Final December reports are scheduled to be available Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024. In addition, January reports are scheduled to be available Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. These and other important dates can be found on the Controller's Office website.
