Northern Illinois University is located in DeKalb, Illinois, approximately 60 miles directly west of Chicago. On-campus enrollment is about 23,000 students, of which about 5000 are graduate students. DeKalb has a population of about 40,000. While university housing is open to graduate students if applications are made early enough, most graduate students live off campus or share apartments with other graduate students. Housing and other living costs are substantial but generally less than larger metropolitan centers. The University offers a variety of sporting, recreational, and cultural events. While most needs can be met locally, there are a number of major shopping centers within a half hour's drive, and downtown Chicago is about 75 minutes away on the toll way. A number of specialized support groups are available for minority and foreign students.
