To receive full consideration, completed applications must be received by the Graduate School in advance of the deadline for the curricular area to which the student is applying. There is NOT a separate application for the Department of Psychology--the NIU Graduate School application is the only one you need. A completed application will consist of:
- The NIU Graduate School's application
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (verbal, quantitative, analytical, and writing). Note that the psychology subject test is NOT required. The ETS codes for NIU and the Psychology Department are 1559 and 2016 (respectively)
- Three letters of recommendation
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work
- Current TOEFL scores (if not a native English speaker)
Points to keep in mind when completing the application:
- Your statement of career goals can be an important aspect of the admissions decision. You should be sure to indicate which specialization of psychology you are interested in studying. Faculty will be particularly interested in seeing how your research interests and career goals match the type of training that we offer.
- Make sure you emphasize any research experience, presentations, or publications that you may have.
- Although we are primarily interested in admitting students who want to work towards a Ph.D.in Psychology, students will complete an M.A. as part of their program of study. If you do not already have an thesis-based M.A. or M.S. (in psychology) you should indicate on your application that your intended degree is the MA. Students will not need to reapply for admission to the Ph.D. program upon completion of their Masters degree.
- There is a separate application for graduate assistantships which can be downloaded here and should be sent to the Graduate School with your other application materials.
- All application materials (including GRE scores, transcripts, & references) should be sent directly to the NIU Graduate School. When your application is complete it will be forwarded to the Psychology department for review.
