Getting into Graduate School Seminar (GIGSS)

Interested in going to graduate school but need help with the process? GIGSS (Getting Into Graduate School Seminar) may be able to help you. GIGSS is a 7 week seminar dedicated to helping undergraduates in psychology prepare for the graduate school application process. It is free and you can receive individual feedback from a mentor. See our flyer for more information and, if interested, print and fill out the application

The application deadline is Friday, December 2nd, 2011, and you must commit to all seven of the seminar's sessions to attend.  Completed applications can be turned into the Department of Psychology's main office in room 400, or an electronic copy can be emailed directly to Dr. Britt at britt@niu.edu

Components of the seminar include but are not limited to:

  • How to decide what program is right for you
  • What experiences are crucial (e.g., research experience)
  • How to write a CV and a personal statement
  • How to prepare for the GRE and what to expect
  • How to request letters of recommendation
  • GIGSS will meet every other week (likely Thurs at 5:00pm) in Spring 2012
  • Includes a lecture and a workshop component
  • Students will receive individual feedback on work samples
  • Not a formal class, no enrollment fee or class credit, NO cost
  • The program is most beneficial to students planning on applying  to Ph.D. programs; however, it is open to students applying to any psychology graduate degree program (e.g., M.A., Ph.D., Psy.D.)
