Diversifying Psychology Open House Resources
The Department of Psychology is quite interested in helping qualified students from under-represented backgrounds succeed in gaining graduate training in the field of psychology, either at NIU or elsewhere. To that end, since 2008, we have hosted the Diversifying Psychology Open House and Workshop at the end of each September. This event is designed to introduce undergraduate students from any university to the graduate school admission process and what will help make their application most competitive. Attendees have the opportunity meet current NIU faculty and graduate students to learn more about the Psychology Department’s specific areas of specialization and the NIU community. Graduate students explain what graduate applicants should consider as they select programs, what they will need as they pull together their application package, and how to make decisions in the end. Issues that may be most relevant to being among the minority in graduate school also will be discussed. Undergraduates at all levels of training (i.e., sophomore through seniors) and in all areas of psychology will find useful information in these presentations.
For more information about the graduate programs at NIU, see NIU’s Psychology Department’s Graduate Program webpage (http://www.niu.edu/psyc/graduate/index.shtml)
