Our Mission

We are a student-centered research department dedicated to high quality scholarship and teaching. We are committed to providing NIU's diverse undergraduate student body with the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible citizenship and successful careers. Liberal arts education, engaged learning and global education are important dimensions of this educational mission.

We seek to develop the next generation of scholar-teachers in our doctoral program. Advanced theoretical and empirical knowledge of political science, methodological pluralism, the capacity to conduct original research, teaching training and experience, and professional rigor and mentorship are important aspects of this educational mission. The department's graduate programs also afford the opportunity for students to develop the knowledge, skills and credentials for advanced positions in nonacademic fields.

Our faculty is committed to advancing theoretical and practical knowledge about politics through quality research and disseminating this knowledge to the academy, policy makers, and the public through scholarly publication, professional activity and community engagement.
