Welcome
The Center for Non-Governmental Organization Leadership and Development (NGOLD) was established in 2010 as Northern Illinois University’s resource for excellence in the study, research, and practice of nongovernmental organizations. Its mission is to enhance and strengthen civil society through nonprofits and other avenues of public service. To do this, NGOLD provides comprehensive programming and services to students, faculty, researchers, and nonprofit organizations by focusing on four primary areas: Academics, Research, Service, and Enhanced Practice.
NGOLD offers an exciting interdisciplinary Community Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) undergraduate major for NIU students and will soon offer a certificate program that allows students in other majors to gain specialization in nonprofit leadership. The Center also carries out research and assists faculty and scholars that are investigating nongovernmental organizations. NGOLD features a variety of programs and services targeted to nonprofits in the northern Illinois region, and beyond, to help promote knowledge sharing and skill development. Finally, both students and nonprofit organizations benefit from NGOLD’s service-learning, internship, and volunteer coordination.
Welcome to NGOLD.
Community Leadership and Civic Engagement Students Visit Washington, D.C.
Six Community Leadership and Civic Engagement majors recently took part in the NGOLD in Washington Program. The students were selected through a competitive application process and received financial support from the NIU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to cover airfare, lodging, and meals. While in D.C. students participated in meetings with nonprofit leaders and congressional staff, took a guided tour of the United States Capital building, toured monuments, visited the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and attended an NIU Alumni Association event.
