Quentin Coaxum (trumpet instructor, counselor) started playing the trumpet in elementary school after listening to the jazz tapes and records left behind by his grandfather. A graduate of NIU’s jazz studies program, Coaxum has become one of Chicago's brightest emerging young trumpeters. He has garnered praise for his ability to perform with modern lyricism while also displaying knowledge of jazz's rich tradition. His unique musical voice evokes the sounds of jazz, soul, alternative, hip hop, and R&B in a way that captivates listeners and fellow musicians alike. He has performed with Jimmy Heath, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Willie Pickens. Curtis Fuller. Marcus Evans. Benny Golson, Lew Solof. John Goldman's Quadrangle, Louis Bellson, the Willerm Delisfort Project, Sarah Marie Young, and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. He is working on his debut album. He is currently the general music teacher at both Richmond and Davis Schools in St. Charles, Illinois, and has been a camp instructor at the NIU Jazz Camp for several years.
