My research interests have long focused on disturbance regimes in plant communities (e.g., fire frequency in the Colorado mountains, treefalls in eastern forests, edge effects due to habitat fragmentation, alteration of fire regimes in shrubland communities). Since summer 2000, my research interests have focused on the likely impacts of climate change on forest communities at the ecotone between deciduous forest and boreal forest. This project is an extension of work that Lesley Rigg and I started in 1999 on the dynamics of sugar maple populations at this ecotone in Lake Superior Provincial Park. My current research direction is evaluating the impact of climate change on the understory of these forests by simulating climate change (artificial heating and manipulated watering regimes). The “Research Topics” tab above provides details on the numerous directions this research is leading. |
