Dissertation Boot Camp

We know that completing your dissertation is a high priority for you. Our dissertation boot camp will give you a structured writing routine with uninterrupted writing time. It will also provide opportunities for feedback from writing coaches who care about your project as much as you do.

Our boot camp is modeled on those offered by Stanford University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Yale University and Claremont Graduate University. The University Writing Center in Stevenson South is the perfect setting for the camp.

Boot Camp Schedule

Our two-day boot camp is limited to 10 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Although priority will be given to NIU students, doctoral candidates from other universities are welcome to enroll. The cost for attending a two-day boot camp is $50. Snacks will be provided each day.

Day One

  • 9-9:45 a.m.: Opening workshop (strategies for understanding boot camp process).
  • 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Focused writing.
  • 12:30-1:15 p.m.: Brown-bag lunch and relaxation techniques.
  • 1:30-4 p.m.: Focused writing/University Writing Center feedback sessions.

Day Two

  • 9-9:45 a.m.: Opening workshop (strategies for writing dissertations).
  • 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Focused writing.
  • 12:30-1:15 p.m.: Brown-bag lunch and workshop on maintaining momentum.
  • 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Focused writing/University Writing Center feedback sessions.
  • 3:30-4 p.m.: Debriefing.

Wednesday Workshops

Two free workshops will be offered every other Wednesday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each lasting between 1 1/2 and two hours.
