The University Writing Center's mission is to help members of the NIU community become more skilled writers. We focus in particular on academic writing for courses, such as essays and presentations, and documents needed for career opportunities, such as resumes and cover letters.

We also help writers identify what they do well in their writing and what they should focus on in the future. When you come to the center for assistance with a writing project, our goal is not only to help you with your project, but also to help you become a stronger, more confident writer.

Our staff includes a director, graduate assistants, and undergraduate and extra-help writing coaches. Our writing coaches are pursuing a wide variety of majors, which allows them to understand the nuances of discipline-specific writing. All coaches receive training before they meet with writers, and they work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

We meet with writers at several locations around campus. We also deliver workshops and presentations on a variety of writing-related topics. Schedule an appointment or give us a call today to see how we can support your growth as a writer.
