Coordinator for Undocumented Student Support, Office of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI)
Sandy López is used to wearing many hats. Throughout her 27 year career at NIU, she has been a teacher, adviser, administrator, and most importantly, a mentor and student advocate.
In 2018 López joined the Office of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI) as the Coordinator for Undocumented Student Support where she strives to amplify the voices of undocumented and mixed-status Huskies.
“My office aims to create a climate of respect for all by addressing emerging and complex issues surrounding undocumented and mixed-status students,” López said. “We focus on increasing access, retention, and graduation rates for students affected by immigration status.”
López and her team aim to raise awareness, challenge assumptions, facilitate conversations, influence university policy and create a support network for students and advocates to reduce equity gaps for Huskies who are undocumented and mixed-status.
“I love being a part of a team that provides a welcoming environment for all students who attend NIU,” López said. “NIU not only provides students with a quality education and a myriad of opportunities for engagement, it also offers the support and resources Huskies need to succeed.”
A proud graduate of NIU, López is actively involved on campus and in the community. She is an adviser for Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc., DREAM Action NIU, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in the Sciences (SACNAS).
