Why NIU?

The search for the right college is full of promise, but it can feel overwhelming. To help, we’re providing some standout reasons why NIU might be the right school for your family:

Affordable

College is a big investment, so we’re committed to making an education affordable to students and the families who support them. Here are some ways we help:

No tuition costs or fees
Our Huskie Pledge to support eligible first-year students.

Over $19 million in scholarships
Not including grants and athletic aid.

80% of Huskies
receive at least one type of financial aid.

Job Focused

We offer a wide variety of academic programs that make it possible for students to apply what they’ve learned so they’re getting both the education and the experience they need to win the jobs of the future. We work with employers in Chicago and across Illinois to provide students the internships, connections and job-related opportunities to ensure their investment pays off after graduation. The average early career salary for our graduates is $57,000 (payscale.com).

Supportive Community

We’re a nationally recognized public university, but we offer a small campus feel. Our faculty work alongside students inside and outside the classroom to help them hone the skills they’ll use after graduation. Students are supported here with over 300 student organizations, several cultural resources, and physical and mental health services. We want your student to succeed and feel at home. We strive to be an extension of your family.
